Hmmm... this is difficult... I personally dont wear navy with black.. but that may just be me, so I dont know how that looks. As for the suits/tux. I think you could get away with just renting jackets for the guys. Most black suit pants, if they are the same material, will look pretty similar as long as they are not faded. You may want to collect them all and see. They just rent jackets so they will match up top. I dont think people will he analyzing them. You can also just ask the GM what they would rather do. If asked they may not mind renting....
We are doing the same thing you questioned for our May wedding... My FI and my son (who is walking me down the aisle) are renting black tuxes with champange "insides" ie vest, tie, etc.. and our 5 groomsmen will be wearing black suits that they own and renting the "insides" in a royal blue pattern. When we went to the tailor shop we asked if this would work and the guy working there said he didnt see any "issues" with it as long as we dont want the 100% uniformed look, which we are okay without having. I mean the worst case would be that one groomsmen as 3 buttons and the other 2.. but for us thats a simple feature we can look over in order to save our bridal party a few hundred dollars.
One thing though.. you did say navy was the contrast color. I do remember him saying that navy next to the black suits may make the ties, etc look worn or visa versa depending on which in more vibrant.
HTH....
Thanks so much for the feedback Future Puida, it sounds like you did some investigation. Best wishes on your upcoming nuptuials! I would love to see a photo of them all together after the big day if you don't mind sharing. Thanks for the tip about the color contrast, I think we may have to check the ties against the suits before figuring this out. We bought a bunch of navy silk ties in advance of any decisions because we found a good sale but I guess it depends how they look with the suits.

I need some hive opinions, here'S the situation:
My FI is set on wearing (and owning) a tuxedo but neither of us find the need to force the groosmen to buy tuxedos. He hates the idea of renting clothes (and shoes) and is a bit uncomfortable asking his friends to do this which is partly a cultural thing (he's from Europe and renting tuxes is not the norm). This lead us to consider asking the groomsmen to wear a black suit they already own however, this presents 3 problems. 1) I'm pretty sure they do not all own a black suit and if they would buy it sprecial for the wedding it is cheaper to just rent the tuxes. 2) I have never seen anyone pair a tux with suits, how will this look in photos? please direct me towards any you may have seen. 3) The black suits would not match with potential variations in color, style , # of buttons, etc.
Additionally, the girls will wear navy blue dresses and the plan is for the guys to wear navy ties if this helps with the mental picture. There is a strong possibility there will be 6 guys and 4 girls (because I don't want to invite others for the sake of balance).
Thanks in advance for your opinions!
