Has anyone seen the show I Cloned My Pet?

It's basically about people who are obsessed with their deceased pets and will do anything to have them back so they get them cloned...  Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my dog (and am a bit obsessed) but some of these people sleep with their pets ashes (years after they've passed) one lady has a huge wall mural of her dog, pillows with his picture on them, his food bowls and she still has his food in the freezer like she's just waiting for him to come back... And he died 3 years ago!!

I LOVE my animals, but I also know that even with cloning my baby pup will be gone when he is gone... I could get an identical looking dog, but once his soul is gone, it's gone... At least that's what I think...

Have any of ya'll seen this show?  What do ya'll think?  Are these people taking things too far?  Would you clone your pet??

I saw it, I got completely hooked slash freaked out.

These people definitely were obsessive compulsive over their deceased animals and definitely took it too far!  The ladys entire bed spread was her dog as well!! They spent like $50,000 on cloning these animals, if not more! They could save so many puppies in need with that kind of money!  I agree with you that once a dog passes cloning it may make it look exactly alike but the soul is gone, its def a different dog! I'd never clone my pet,  I'd start over with a new little guy... I love animals as well but that is def. taking it too far!!

I saw it too, it was SO weird!!! LOL. It's like one of those things, you dont want to look but you kinda cant look away! Like Hoarders: Buried Alive. Same concept lol. I personally am head over heels for my little furbaby, so I haven't experienced that pain of loosing him....BUT, I think their obsessions are completely irrational and a little crazy. Creating an animal with your dead animal's DNA is creating a relative of your pet lol Not reincarnating your pet. It's soooo crazy but sooo good to watch lol.

I watched it last week. The part where they are with the new cloned puppy and saying how it remembers/recognises them just kills me. It might have the same DNA but the memories and experiences of the original dog don't come with that! I just wanna shake them!

@heyitskate:  haha I've never heard of this show before until I saw it today... The episode on right now has a dog whisperer on it talking to a cloned dog! lol  so weird!

@MissCallieJean:  @PitBulLover:  it is super weird... I'm borderline obsessed with my dog but I don't think I could ever take it to that level...

I'm actually watching a rerun of this now. I love my dog (like you, i would say borderline obsessed), butttttt it's not the same dog (nature vs nurture concept in play). I guess if you raise it the same way you raise the other its going to be similar - but spending 50k to get a similar dog...ehhhh.

As an aside the woofy guy seems completely nuts. He seems to really think his dog is coming back to life. If I was his gf I would be running in the other direction...she is extreemly understanding (much more than i would be)

As much as I dread the day my pets leave this earth, I would never consider cloning them. They are my babies, and no clone can replace them. Like you said, OP, it is a different pet despite them looking identical. Off to go cuddle with my babies now! :)

@countrygirl62312:  seriously!!  I'm watching it now!  The guy is nuts!!

I'm also starting to be really concerned about these "surrogate" momma dogs... I mean, how many times do they do this?  They do c-sections on them... Are the momma's well taken care of?!  It's in Japan so I would think their standards of animal care are much different?

I felt very sad for those people! I felt bad that they lost their pet(I recently lost my kitty :*(, which made me cry half the episode)...but on the other hand...cloning your pet after they passed away 3 years ago...or 10 i believe the one guys passed away...is really strange to me...they actually thought the pet would remember...the whole concept is strange....they never stopped grieving this loss and that is really sad.

Sorry I couldn't explain how I felt about this a little better...I guess I can't wrap my head around it...

@Aure:  your probably right... I couldn't remember exactly.  I still worry about those surrogate momma's though!

ETA: that crazy guy with "wolfie" has TWO clones of the dog he lost 10 years ago!!  He tried to clone 5, but three didn't make it... That guy needs some serious therapy, you would think after 10 years he would have made peace with his pet's passing.

    HAHAHA hilarious!!!!

I worry about the mamas too, hope they are well taken care off.

Other thing is they said they took two "woofys" home to LA with them...so two of the exact same dog. Wow. I'd be curious how similar they turn out (personality wise).

    Wow !

    Counseling is much cheaper.

At times I can say , " Oh wouldn't it be nice to have Buster  live on" but then It would end up selfish because there are thousands of other pets waiting for  a furever home. And it would be purely looks based, I doubt they would have similar personality's , even if you raise them the same way.

How about taxidermy? lol I watch extreme taxidermy on animal planet, seems like a nice in between ;)

Wow - I haven't seen this show but it sounds really creepy.

And with the cloning - I agree with the PPs that while genetically it may be the same dog, it wouldn't have the same personality.  Look at identical twins!

I saw this & I can't believe I sat thru the whole thing! I just kept saying to my FI "these people are crazy!" I mean sheesh, I love my dog, but.. cloning is taking it a bit too far. Completely nuts if you ask me. Maybe more so that the people think they're getting the same dog back.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SO TRUE

I love my dog to death, but once he is gone he is gone. A clone wouldn't make him have the same personality. And his personality, not his looks, are why I love him. (although he is so dang cute I could literally squeeze him to death.)

^this!!  I always say things like that, whether it's an adorable baby kitten or my animals... But whenever I say that people look at me like I'm posessed and actually want to hurt the cute little fur balls!  lol  I guess saying I wanted to squish kittens wasn't the best thing to say when I was working at an animal shelter. ;)

The whole thing just disgusted me. A genetically identical clone will NOT be the same (experiences in puppyhood are what shape personality, the new pup might experience a thunderstorm and be afraid of loud noises it's whole life, whereas the first dog might not have... just as an example).

I find it deplorable to spend that kind of money bringing a new dog into the world when you consider how many unwanted pets could be rescued with those funds!

I love my dog so much but it isn't his DNA that I love, it's his personality and his general adorableness . . . and LIFE made him that way. In different circumstances, if I'd had him since birth/cloning (we adopted at 10 months) and he lived a totally different life, would he still be the same? I doubt it.

I also don't have any need to REPLACE him. In fact, I don't even know if I'd get the same breed again. I think it would be too hard, let alone an exact replica.

Also, didn't Dolly the sheep die really young due to health complications? I'm not convinced cloning is safe/foolproof.

^This exactly!  It would be way too hard to look at a dog that looks just like my pup when he passes... Although I love my deaf dog and wouldn't hesitate to adopt another deaf dog, I wouldn't want or expect him to be just like my boy now...  It would be WAY too hard.

I tuned in last week as well and to be honest, I felt really sad about the whole show.  As someone who just lost my pet and is still having a hard time with it, I felt for those pet owners, I really did.  However, I totally believe that each of them needs some serious therapy.  They were obviously stuck in a very unhealthy place (one woman slept with her dog's ashes; a man's new girlfriend had to accept and understand that his deceased dog comes first before her in his life).

I also felt really upset for the dogs.  I only watched the one episode I mentioned, but I noticed that all the puppies were delivered by C-section.  It made me wonder if it would be easier and more cost effective for them to dispose of the surrogate rather than spend the time and money to help them heal after such an invasive surgery (the cuts made were long and large enough for a grown man's hands (yes both hands) to reach into).

I also felt sad because so many of the puppies died shortly after their births.

The whole show was depressing on so many levels.

There was a news segment (on 20/20 maybe?) about this show before it aired. The surrogates usually end up at dog farms (I think the kind where dogs are raised to be eaten? Some may go towards lab experiments...I can't remember) where they live in horrible conditions before dying/being killed/being eaten/etc. Even if the cloning facility insists the surrogates and extra unwanted clones and such are going to be sent to a nice, happy farm, it's generally really the bad "farm."

@Juliepants:  "I also felt really upset for the dogs. " That's hoe I feel as well.

There's another problem. The process of cloning increases the risk of deformities. I haven't kept up with recent developments, so they may be using new techniques that alleviate the problems, but I don't think so.

I know it sounds crazy. But what can you do when they are so cute you just want to squeal?! These sentences come out of my mouth and I can't control it when I see the dog!!

What really bites is that these poor souls would clone their animals and still not have their beloved pet "back". First of all, there is an amazingly high rate of failure with cloned animals. Many of the embryos are not viable and there are a lot of stillborns and horribly mutated offspring. Also,  genetics are influenced by the environment, starting with the environment in the egg, womb, and continuing throughout life. I have seen cloned pets and they no more resemble the original pet than a natural sibling.
