Let me start by saying me and Fiance are approx. 10 months out from TTC. Fiance is a twin (twin sister) and his grandfather was a twin as well. People keep commenting on how exciting it would be if we had twins as well. And while certainly it would be a blessing and i would take whatever the universe gave to us…
My question is:
Does Fiance being a twin have anything to do with me having twins? (call me niave but i thought it was only if the girl was a twin?) -and for the record there are no twins on my side of the family-
Is it possible that Fiance being a twin and having twin history in his family might result in us having twins as well?
Much love and appreciating to anyone who might be able to help. xo

I am not a twin and have no twins in my family. However, my understanding has always been that twins generally skip a generation.
I have a friend whose father is a twin, and I also believe her mother had twin sisters. My friend and her siblings were all individual children; however, my friend has a set of twins.

Twins have to run on the female side. It’s YOUR body that does the twin-ing – releasing two eggs or dividing one in two… unlike the gender, which is all him.

@mepayne: that is what i thought too! But then i asked a few people and they were convinced that was not the case.? And i know things happen and sometimes your body just has twins without ever having a case of them in your family but i was convinced it was a mom thing vs. a dad thing

@MrsHoneyC: You are right. I’ve been wanting twins since I was a little girl so I did a pretty large amount of research on the biology behind it. It’s definitely 99% whatever your body decides to do, and has very little to do with his family.
Your daughter(s) will have a higher chance of having twins because of your husband, but you won’t.
Here’s a pretty clear, easy-to-understand link.

I had a boyfriend (ex) that was a twin, his mother had 2 sets of twin boys. His mother was also a twin. He told me that since I have no twins in my family, we (hypothetically) probably wouldn’t have twins, but there was a high chance that our kids could have twins. You need that “twin gene” in you.

I am also a Twin the same kind as your Fi with a Twin brother. I have two sets of Twins in my extended family on my Dad’s side so it depends. I also would prefer not to have Twins, but I know I can’t control it so whatever happens happens I guess. I think I have a very low chance of having Twins though.

@mepayne: Thanks for the article, I’ve wondered about this because my great-grandma was an indentical twin but there haven’t been any since.

I’ve always wondered about this too, as I am a twin! In my family, the twins are on my dads side. He and his sister both had a set of twins each! Ive always heard it skips a generation too, however my friends who are twins, have a mom who is a twin! I do agree is it probably 99% of what your body decides as well, but I am definitely going to read that article! Thanks!

I agree with the PPs that the twins have to run in the female’s side of the famiy for there to be any increased chance of you having twins.
I’ve definitely confirmed this because twins run in DH’s family (his dad is a twin and I know there were a few other sets). I wish his family history played a role though because I think I would enjoy having twins!
