Okay, so I was wondering if anyone wanted to give me some feedback on these two dresses I tried on. My mom and a good friend who went with me and saw them on me liked them both, and I can't share with my fiance because he refuses to see my dress before the wedding.
FYI: I know I'm a big girl, I'm a size 14-16 street, but I have lost 75+ pounds over the last 2 years and I'm steadily losing, so please don't hold it against me. :(

Okay, so this is dress #1. I kind of like it. I felt comfortable in it and my mom thought it made me look the slimest, but I was just kinda blah. It's not spectacular, but it's not horrible either.

And this is dress #2. I never thought of even trying this on because I didn't think (1) I'd find it in a size large enough to try on, and (2) I had kind of given up on any of the mermaid silhouette dresses going on over my hips, but the person at the bridal salon brought it to me and asked if I would like to try it on. I really love it and I think it's beautiful, but I'm worried that my "phantom fat" syndrome sees myself as 100x larger than I am.
Any thoughts on the dresses? Thanks so much! :)
I would have never guessed you're a 14-16, so first of all, congrats on your weight loss! Both look great on you but I am partial to the first as well, and do agree with your mom that it is very slimming. The second one kind of "cuts" you in a unique way and might "shorten" you.
I think the first one does more for your figure, but the second is way more fun. Depends on what look you're going for. =)
I really like the first one. The neckline is so pretty, and I love the gather at the waist! To be honest, the second one cuts wierd through your middle, and makes you look a lot wider.
You look wonderful! Your arms look fabulous! I think you are still mentally carrying those extra pounds around even though your body let them go!
I think you look flawless in the first dress but I agree that the second one is much more special and it seems to be where your heart is. Get the one that makes you feel giddy!
number one is definitely very figure flattering: you look great in it. but does it feel great? does it make you happy?
You look terrific. Could it be possible that you haven't found your dress yet? I'm just wondering because I think you look awesome and these dresses don't quite reflect that. The first is more figure flattering than the second, but I think you desrve to feel like a bombshell!
I have some ideas, but I don't want to be too presumptuous!
Congrats on the weight loss! You should be so proud of yourself!
I do think Mom is right about the first being a little more flattering, however, i think the first dress being strapless has a lot to do with it. With the second dress having semi-cap sleeves, it makes your shoulders look more narrow (than they look in the first dress) thereby making your proportions in the second dress not as even (symmetrical) as with the first dress. I think the second dress would be more flattering if it were strapless. Does that make sense?
Don't make any apologies for your size - and pick the dress that you like best!
Honestly - you look Beautiful in both the dresses and congrats on your AMAZING acheivement!!!!!!!
Are you sold on either dresses? I am only asking because I think you have a gorgeous hour glass figure and there are so many dresses out there - so basically I guess I am saying you could do better! I don't want you to settle because you have doubts what looks good on you - you have a beautiful shape and you should work it!!!!! Have you tried on any corset dresses? All the dresses I tried on were just eh until I tried on a corset top and it made me look at least 2 sizes smaller and so I fell in love with that style!
Good luck and Have fun!
I like the first dress on you! I think the second dress has too many dividing lines. Just my opinion! Hope u decide on your dream dress!
krissycake: Thank you so much! :) I wish I could combine the two and have the uniqueness of the second dress with the slimming middle part of the first. The cut across the skirt flaring out on the second one is the only thing that's keeping me thinking on whether it's the one or not.
sunnyb77: The only thing I'm set on is trying to stay away from big poofyness. LOL. My mom kept having me try on big, glittery ballgowns, and that was fun.. but yeah, not what I'm going for. I guess I just want to look classic, so that when I look back on pictures in 10-20 years, I'm not going, "Oh God, I can't believe I wore that.." Heehee!
Johnsbride09: Yeah, I definitely see what you're saying about the second one. I felt like it looked good on in the store, but when I saw the pictures upon getting home I was like, "Whoa, I didn't realize I was THAT wide!" I don't want to have that problem when the wedding pics come back, y'know?
jocelyn3476: Aw, thank you so much! I'm so insecure about them, so your compliment has totally made my day. :) Thanks for the kind words and advice!
sleepylittlesailor: I felt very grown up and mature in #1, but I didn't have any of those "OMG, this is it" moments. I did like it. I might have to try it on again and see.
Mrs. DG: That could be the issue. I really haven't been crazy about anything I've tried on, and I've been a little bit reserved about experimenting because I feel like the bombshell stuff is for just the size 2-8 brides. LOL. Feel free to give me some ideas! I am totally open to it. :)
AFishCalledPuddles: Aw, thank you! Yeah, I do think the first one made me look thinner. I wish I could adjust the sleeves on the second dress, but it has one of those backs.. where the sleeves pin together behind your neck and there's an open circle for your back to show? I wish I knew if it had a technical term.. but you know what I mean. :) Yeah, I think if it were strapless though, it would be a lot more flattering. I didn't even think about that until you mentioned it, but that's a really valid point!
Future Mrs. Martin: Thank you so much! :) I'm not really sold on either one, to be honest. They're both beautiful dresses, but I feel questionable about them both. Thank you for the compliment on my figure, that's so flattering! I actually haven't tried on any of the corset gowns, but I've been toying with the idea of going to the nearest place that sells the Maggie gowns to see if something works on me. Do they really make that big of a difference? If so, that is insanely awesome! :)
weaverm26: Thanks so much! I appreciate you giving these a look. :)
nurseamanda: Thanks! :D
Miss Sapphire: (I love your avatar pic. So pretty!) Thank you! :)
Sn: A *key hole* back :) Don't give up on the va-va-va-voom-y dresses . . . you could totally pull one off! Oh, and a sweetheart neckline would also be fabulous on you!
Keep us posted and good luck!
i like the first one but i love your curves and the lace in the second... btw, you were a big girl, now you're curvaceous baby!! 75 lbs is like loosing my 8 year old! you rock! and we are the same size and when i get engaged i'm flaunting my curves and hope i can do it half as well as you. have you gone to davids bridal or alfred angelo to try on dresses? both have dresses in our size. i don't like that line looking thingie in the 2nd (and wouldn't like it if you were a size 00 so it has nothing to do with you at all, it's the dress)...
AFishCalledPuddles: That's it! A key-hole back! You are awesome. Thank you. You give great advice. I love the sweetheart necklines. I'm going to try some of the more sexy kinds of dresses to see how they look. You have inspired me! Thank you very much! :)
crebre80: Aw, thank you so much! Honestly, I haven't gone to David's Bridal because I hadn't really seen anything on the website that interested me, but I'm tempted to go check them out and try some stuff on. I haven't tried on any Alfred Angelo gowns, but I've heard good things. I'm with you on that line.. it's the only thing with the dress that really keeps me from totally, completely loving it, you know?
Congrats on your weight loss! That is a huge accomplishment!
I think dress #1 is more flattering on you, but I agree with the other posters, you should keep looking since dress #1 isn't wowing you.
The corset I tried on and am buying is actually a maggie - they are as amazing as everyone says they are :-)
OK, so I'm trying to find the dress I was first thinking of. It's a gold ruched strapless dress, that has wide ruching (about 1 1/2 inches wide) that narrows at the waist and continues down through the hips, then opens up. I saw it on a size 14-16 girl and it was amazing! I tried it on too and it flattered my body type as well... I could have sworn it was pronovias, but I'm not finding it just now. Bees can you help? Maybe a little like San Patrick Fiordo, but that wasn't exactly it... but close. (pictured last below)
Here are 2 others with similarly flattering profiles. Both are by Sophia Tolli. I've tried them on, and I can tell you they are very flattering!
You're a beautiful girl, aren't you? I mean, beneath that weird face blocker are some pretty amazing and high cheekbones, eh?
Anyhow, I have to agree with what some of the other girls have hinted at -- keep looking. You haven't found your dress yet. I also agree with the last post before mine -- you must try the Maggie Sottero Michelle or Adelaide or the first of the three she posted here which will give you an amazing waist- and bust=line, I promise. those gowns are like body shapers. Plus, why not give your wonderful new figure a little help -- we all are -- I love the ardyss golden corsette I got on line -- it gives me a scarlet o'hara waistline to die for and it will give you this too, you'll see. and then it makes the chest and shoulders stand out just right. keep shopping. and maybe sneak a coupla' trips by yourself to get used to your new bod and try on a few different styles without hearing anybody else's opinion besides your own. i promise you, you'll know.
Oh my goodness girl, you look AMAZING!!! Congrats on losing all of that weight...what a huge accomplishment and total motivation for me :) You said that you have pictured only the size 2-8 girls in the va va voooom gowns, but you look like you fit in that category!! I would have guessed you at an 8!
I don't think that you could go wrong with either gown, but my preference is for the first one. My only reservation about the second gown is how it "cuts" you. If it were all lace, without the hem in the middle, I think that it would be perfect!! I would keep looking for a combo of both gowns :)
I like the cut and silhouette of #1 better. I think the ruching and asymmtric lines are very slimming and flattering on you. #2 seems to cut you into 3 odd pieces-- not as flattering as #1 for sure.
Of the two, I think you look best in the first dress. The second makes you look short and wide, especially through the hips. But I think you don't sound really happy with either. Unless you're getting married tomorrow- keep looking! Also, if you find a style you like, but not the price, check out etsy. I found a beautiful dress that the designer will custom make to my measurements (I'm a 16-18 myself after loosing weight and continuing to lose through to the wedding).
Also, congrats on the weight loss! You look fabulous and I agree with JoeBeth12- I can't see your face, but what I can looks beautiful! :)
I had a hard time choosing, but ultimately, I like the first one better. The second one makes you look a bit more "hippy" if you know what I mean. Plus the beading and the accents on the first are quite lovely!
Here are my fave alfred angelo's... 1640
2034
david's bridal dresses look crappy on the skinny models, but great on real people (check the you versus model thread here and you'll see what i mean)
Hold it against you!? Never-- you're rocking both those dresses! Congratulations on losing 75lbs! Incredible :)
I definitely like the 1st dress better on you though. The A-line is much more flattering on your figure & the second dress kind of cuts you in half! You look much taller & slimmer in the first photo, but I LOVE the veil on you! It's a stunner...
texasmeredith: Thank you so much! :)
Future Mrs. Martin: Oh wow, I'm definitely going to try and check them out. There's a local bridal shop that sells them, so I'm going to go and try a couple on. Hopefully one will work in my favor! Thanks for the great tip. :)
Mrs. DG: Oh my gosh, they're beautiful, but that third one with the mantilla veil is so gorgeous! Wow! I must say, I never thought that style - with the rushing and the gather at the side would flatter me, but it appears it really does, so I'm going to try to find dresses that are similar to that style to try on. (I am sooo loving that third one. OMG.)
JoeBeth12: Aww, you are so flattering, I'm blushing! I do have high cheekbones, actually. Thank you so much. I tried to blur my face out because my mom was taking pictures of me while I was talking, so I have these really awkward facial expressions. LOL. I'm going to check in on that corsette you mentioned. I know everyone swears by Spanx, but the more I'm sucked in, the better. Thank you for the recommendation. I'm going to go looking at dresses Friday after work and just try a couple of them on to see how I feel in certain styles.
futuredrbraun: Thank you so much for the sweet compliments! OMG, I feel a million times better thanks to you! :D Yeah, the cuts in the second gown.. ugh.. if only they weren't there! Looking for a combination is a nice idea. I'm definitely going to keep that in mind! :)
ddubzz: Thanks for giving me some feedback! I appreciate it (and I love your Hello Kitty avatar)! :)
rabbit: That's a good tip about Etsy. I never thought to look there for a wedding dress. Congrats to you on your weight loss! That's awesome! Have you already purchased your dress? I've got 6 months until my wedding, but it looks like you've got a lot more.. which is nice! How much weight are you hoping to lose? Thanks so much for the sweet words! :)
EngagedToPanda: Thank you! I agree - the second one makes me look seriously wide in the hip area. I didn't see it in the store when I was wearing the dress, but the pictures were like a wake up call. I'm so glad I waited to "sleep on" whether I loved the dress or not! :)
crebre80: Oh my, that pink Alfred Angelo gown is gorgeous! I love the flowered detail on the side. I wonder if that comes in an ivory color. The second one is beautiful, too. Very simple and elegant. I'm going to click around on the Alfred Angelo website and see what I can find. I'd love to try on both of those, for sure. Thank you for sharing these! :D
RecessionistaBride: Thank you so much! I really appreciate the compliments and the feedback on the dresses. I do love that veil. It just seemed to frame my big head so well! Thanks again! :)
I definitely think you haven't found "the one" yet. #2 is just not flattering on you. I see dresses like this often and my eyes zoom in on your crotch and i see that first. THat line just bisects you. #1 looks nice on you, but I definitely think you can blow us away with a few more trips to the dress store =].
If you plan on losing mroe weight, a dress with a corset back may be a good choice> personally i love 'em, but it makes for less last-minute alterations =]
I love this one and think it would be so flattering on you! it's a lil bit mermaid too =] http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?pageSize=100&style=S5246BLUHC and this one has a fuller skirt: http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?pageSize=100&style=A3342BRT
=]
You look great! I really like #1 on you better. I like some of the other dresses posted by DG too!
I'd say definitely steer away from the first dress - it looks great, but you don't sound like you love it. Why settle?
The second one is a really fun silhouette on you, and makes the most of your curves! I wish wish wish I had the hips to rock a mermaid! *jealous* But, I agree with Krissycakes - that particular dress isn't quite right. I think it's the seam running across, just above your knees.
If I were you, I'd be looking for a more flow-y mermaid. And by flow-y I mean one where the skirt flows into itself, rather than billowing out at a seam. In my head, I call them knee waists, haha, and I don't really think I've seen them flatter anyone's body, at least not the way a more naturally occuring mermaid does. :)
ETA: If anyone on WB ever gives you a hard time about being a size 14-16, lemme know and I'll yell at them, because that's just plain rude. :)
ejs4y8: Good point about the crotch thing. Not a good idea. As far as it goes with the corset back thing, I think that's a good idea to keep in mind. I didn't really consider that when trying on things. I've been looking around on the Maggie site and printing out a couple pics of dresses I like.. I actually have the Melissa Brooch one on my list, but I totally overlooked the Braxtyn. It's beautiful! Thanks for the recommendations. You have a good eye for this kind of thing! :)
pmerr: Thanks for your consideration! I'm glad I got some opinions on the gowns. It helps clear my head from all the dress confusion! :)
daydreamwanderer: I know exactly what you're talking about! I think those would be way more flattering on my shape. The seam on that 2nd dress totally ruins it. If it had been like a natural flowy progression, it would have looked a lot nicer. Aw, thanks for your help and thank you for being so sweet! Everyone at WeddingBee has been so lovely and helpful.. I just love you girls! Wedding planning is stressful, but you guys make it so much easier! :)
I'm really digging the first dress and I think it looks gorgeous on you!
i love the first one on you!! You look stunning in it!! I love the second one too but I think strapless and rouching are super flattering on you. You are going to be a gorgeous bride. i think that you should keep on looking before deciding though because it doesn't sound like YOU are sold on either of these.
I like the first one the best. I am also a size 14 wedding dress (big hips/butt) and they said that anything that has a seam or wrap that hits at across the hip accents that area and makes you look larger there. I tried on my dress which wraps at the waist and it is much more flattering on me.
Congrats on the weight loss, it was hard work wasn't it??? I've been in the same boat and am at the same size as you, so I know what you have been and are going through. My advice- use the curves to your advantage!!!!!! I'll tell you what one saleslady told me....you may not be a sample size 8, but with those curves/proportions, you could wear ANY dress. So go out there and try all sorts of dresses on, including the more form fitting ones. You will be surprised what you can pull off.
If I had to pick between the above, I'd go for 1 over 2, but I think your search isn't over. Have fun!
I say keep looking. You obviously don't love the first dress, so that is a NO. And the second dress is pretty, but it makes you look short, and you want to length your body to look thinner.
I say go to Alfred Angelos and Davids Bridal and try on more dresses - both those stores will have a lot of styles to try on.
I am a size 18 and was very worried about finding a dress that didn't make me look like a snow-beast and I found my perfect dress at A.A.
Congrats on losing all the weight! You go girl!!
I think your body looks gorgeous-- please try not to be so hard on yourself!
That being said, I don't think you've found YOUR dress yet. Keep looking! When you find it, you'll know!
First off, I think you look pretty awesome! I love the wrap detail on the first dress on you. It makes your waist look teeny. The second dress is pretty, but I don't like the proportion as much. That top ribbon looks nice, but I think the mermaid thing hits you in a weird place. Maybe if it were a little higher or lower, but I think it makes your torso look shorter?
FWIW, I'm a 12 in regular clothes and I had trouble finding sample size dresses that fit me. Honestly, I gave up trying mermaid styles immediately because I could never actually get them on, let alone see what they looked like! I think you'd look great in a slim A-line, which is what I ended up getting. I tried on ball gowns, but I kept feeling like the dresses made me look bigger. With something that was a little more fitted, I felt like my figure looked better. Also, my dress had a drop-waist, which might work for you, too. I didn't find anything I liked at Davids, but my dress was a Casablanca and so was my second choice.
Congrats on your weight loss! :) That's quite an achievement and keep it up! :)
Between the dresses, I think #2 is more flattering on you. However, I, like some other girls, think that there are still many many options out there that would enhance your hourglass shape and more flattering. Try some A-line dresses or modified A-line if you think A-line is too full.
