This is a great opportunity, and a pretty good deal. It's only one day long and we saved $60 on our marriage license, so instead of paying $72 we only paid $12. It wasn't like therapy or counseling, and didn't bring up many of the "tough issues" (kids, sex, etc.) but it did focus on communicating to work through issues. We even role played listening & responding. :)
I got their brochure from their booth at the Austin Bridal Extravaganza. It looks like a really good opportunity.
We took this class. We loved it. It has improved our relationship so much. It is SO VERY worth taking it. At our class, we played "The Newleywed Game" at the end, and WE WON! YAY! We won a prize and everything. I suggest it to couples all the time to take it just to improve their communication skills with each other even if they are not talking marriage yet.
I saw this when I looked up the marriage license requirements for our county. We're going to try it!
We are also signed up for this class... I think my FI is not so excited... but me on the other hand, I think it cant hurt and im even going to go out on a limb and say I'm excited! :)
I know one of the venues I am looking at is offering this class - they are also wanting to do 'reunion' type classes that get together a year after the wedding and go over more stuff.
We were signed up for the August class, but we very kindly gave up our spot in order to accomodate couples that were getting married sooner (sept, oct.) because our wedding is still a ways away. Unfortunately, i should have held onto our spot because I have sat. classes until december, and after that is football playoffs. No good deed goes unpunished.
Just an update on this: The people who were organizing this for our area have decided to do so no longer and the ministry running things now is a very... enthusiastic... minister. When I got the e-mail I checked out his website and neither FI nor I were impressed. We are both practicing Christians, but looking for a practical approach to marriage counseling. We ended up canceling and finding a really need marriage ministry through Northwest Fellowship that we are excited about (more one on one).
I live in Austin and Mr. CurlyQ lives just outside Houston...which is good because we were having a very hard time finding a class in Austin. So just to let you know you can take the class in ANY county in Texas..doesn't have to be the same one are getting married in.
I'm kind of excited for this- our church is a "service provider". I was worried we would have to drive up to Fort Worth for it but this saves us a lot of time and gas.
I work at a non-profit along side this program. If you have any questions about it feel free to PM me... we also have the Couple Checkup for pre-marital couples (which does not have a location requirement either)!
I work with ANTHEM, the Dallas area provider, and we did some stuff with the Austin and Waco providers too. The govt. cut a lot of our funding last May, so that's where a good many of the programs went. But you can find some in San Marcos and Waco if Austin is proving a little scarce. It really is a great class, 8 hrs. and most include a meal. The state chose to emphasize conflict resolution and anger management as a way to prepare couples for marriage.I plan on doing a big post on it before my wedding, so you can find more info there or on the TwoGetherinTexas.org website.
A note for future program attendees-
1. I highly recommend the Waco program through Legacy Family, especially if you can get into Darrell and Cindy's class. You do get one-on-one (and the groups stay fairly small) and Cindy is a professional counselor.
2. Not all of the programs are free. The one we went through did cost but it was a "Twotgether in Texas Certified program", it went beyond the basic requirments to include things specific to Christian Couples and there was a great weekend retreat at the end.
How did yall sign up for this? Is there an online sign up, or do you have to find a provider and call them about classes?
HoneyBear,
Here's the link to their website:

You can enter your zipcode & find a location near you. I'm excited about this because when I lived in Ohio, we NEVER had anything like this offered to us!
