@graygodess20:  Oh exciting!! My first ultrasound was at 11w5d and it was a regular, over the belly one and we could see everything!! Facial features, fingers, feet, spine. I bet this early it’s a vaginal u/s. At 8 weeks I was able to hear a loud hb of 170 with the doppler. Sorry that’s all the info I have!

mine at 8 weeks was abdominal. he said that it was so early that he could see the basics that way (that its not ectopic pregnancy, that its roughly right size etc) and a transvaginal one would be uncomfortable for me and really not show that much more information

@graygodess20:  I think they will start with abdominal, but if they can’t get good enough measurements, they will switch to transvag after. That’s what happened with me. I never it had it before and it wasn’t so bad!

@graygodess20:  What happened with me was they asked me to drink the water (for the tummy one) but I was too early so got to use the bathroom and they did the transvaginal one instead, which was good and clear. Good luck!

My first one was at 8 weeks and they did a transvaginal.  It was not uncomfortable at all.

They’ll start abdominally (that’s why you need a full bladder), and if they can see what they need, then you’re done.  If they can’t, you pee and they do a transvaginal.  I had one at my anatomic to check my cervical length, and it wasn’t bad at all.  Good luck!

I had my first ultrasound at 11w5d. It was mostly on the belly, but she did to a transvaginal at the end to check my ovaries.

@graygodess20:  My first at 7w and 2nd at 7w4d were both abdominal and both were perfectly able to see baby, read heartbeat, and take measurements, but everyone else in my month board had transvaginal that early.

I believe it depends on your size. I’m plus size, so at 8w mine was transvaginal, didn’t bug me though. I got to see the little bean and a heartbeat. Also at 8w (vs 6w) it looks a lot more like a baby 🙂

I required a vaginal scan at 9 weeks because my uterus is tipped back and wasn’t showing very well on my friend’s clinic’s old-and-busted machine. A rear-tipped (opposite of normal) uterus makes abdominal scans difficult until after 12 weeks when the uterus leaves the pelvic cradle.
