My sister got two 6 weeks old golden retriever mix puppies from a rescue in SC. She brought them home on Saturday and Monday night she and I (I was a vet technician for 6 years) took them to the emergency vet clinic. One of them had very bad diahrreah and I told her it would be best to bring them both in.(She brought the puppies into her vet on Monday morning and he said everything looked ok). Well After $400 at the E-clinic they determined there was no parvo but told us to bring it to a vet in the morning. I made her take them to my vet because I couldnt see how in 10 hours the puppy could go from being fine to not being fine. So anyways my doc did bloodwork, parvo testing (again), and a fecal and the only thing he found was a high white cell count so he deemed the go to have intercistits cause by e-coli or salminela. Well After sending her home with 7 medications the puppy started getting better. Fast forward to yesterday... I helped her take them to the vet for their first shots. We took them in my x-terra since I have plastic in the back and when I went to take them out of the car... there was (I apologize for the graphic nature upcoming) bloody diahrrehea ALL OVER the back of my car which my sister hadnt seen before then. So we take them in and sure enough there is something worse... because of the bad gastrointestinal problems, his intestines has wrapped around themselves. Low and behold not only did the doc recommend an ultrasound, but he ended up having to have surgery. Well the report from last night was it was the worst case hes ever seen and he couldnt cut any of the intestine out that he wanted to but he did unwrap it from itself. The next 24 hours were crucial. Luckily the puppy is still alive, but the next 5 days will determine if the puppy survives. Meanwhile my sister called the rescue she got the puppy from and they are insistant that my sister got them sick and this is none of their doing. Not only did she pay $250 to get them from the rescue.. she has put out almost $5000 in TWO WEEKS on this dog. My sister is a very very nice person and she doesnt want to start drama, but I am just enraged at how this palce is handeling the situation.

Sorry but I just needed to vent!

That really sucks. I hate the pass the blame game. I hope the puppies are ok! I will say that I got one of my kittens from a breeder (a licensed one!) and he still turned out to be super sick. Sometimes you just never know =(. Poor babies though! Those pups will be so grateful they got rescued though. She saved their lives! Surely they wouldn't have done well at the clinic.

What kind of rescue was it that she got them from? Is it just a private one owned by regular people or is it like a vet or pound type place? Could it be possible that they truly didn't know the puppies were sick? Maybe the symptoms hadn't hit them yet..

I feel so bad for the puppy and I hope he makes it. Your sister sounds like a very kind and compassionate person to spend so much money on a puppy she just got that may or may not survive!

I hope everything works out and I can understand your frustration!

Ugh, I'm really sorry :(  All I can say is that it is so wonderful of your sister to care for this poor puppy.  I hope he is doing better, keep us posted!

This is a very well known rescue in SC... My sister said that the lady would NOT show her the kennel area and two of the other puppies in the litter looked like they were half dead and the lady said "Oh they are just tired". She left these 5 WEEK OLD puppies in a kennel from 9am to 6pm everyday!!!

Yikes! I'm so sorry! As a dog lover, I can only imagine how hard this much be on everyone!

I might actually consult with the legal boards and see if maybe you can file a legal complaint with the shelter just go see about getting some reimbursement for the money you've had to dish out. I understand that it's a shelter, and they probably don't have a ton of money, but it seems to me they MUST have known something was up, and that's just not right. I really think your sister needs some kind of financial compensation, even if only a little.

I told my sister she should atleast ask for the $250 she paid for them back. I said she doesnt have to ask them to pay for the vet bills, but the $250 was for guarenteed healthy puppies and they certainly were not!!

UGH!!! that is so frustrating. Its such a hard situation because rescues do the best the can (generally) but sometimes they really need to do better. I had a semi-similar situation. I got a cat from rescue that was very sickly when I got him but they told me that he had been tested and was negative for everything. I actually had him a bit over a year, was religious with vet visits, shots, etc, he was never ever let outside, never came into contact with other cats... one day he gets sick and he goes to the e-vet, he had feline leukemia! He was so bad off that they had to put him down. I was infuriated because he clearly had it when he came to me as there was no possibility of him contracting it while he was with me. If I had known I could have taken preventative steps for him, or at least been aware that I would probably lose him too soon. It was heartbreaking to get him just past the annoying kitten phase and really bond with him just to have him taken away so soon. I contacted the rescue and their response was basically "oops." ARgh.

That's insane. Sounds like the woman running the rescue is pretty shady. I'd def look into it and report them. There's probably a ton of other poor dogs/puppies like this and they're claiming to be a "rescue". Not cool.

@ TheRen - I'm half willing to be you it's a puppy mill, NOT a rescue. Puppy mill owners refuse to show their areas to prospective buyers as well.

Are you sure this place is a real rescue (501c and all)?  It sounds a lot more like a byb...

I totally agree. Good luck and maybe it will end up being one less puppy mill!

Wow, I'm really sorry. Your sis is an angel. That dog would have been put down in my house. (Because I'm poor, not cruel.) I doubt you'll get your money back but maybe that place will get shut down and shield other familys from this stress.

My goal was not to start legality process.. my goal is to make sure not another family has to go through what my sister is growing through now. I hate seeing my older sister in tears and I refuse to let this lady get away with this.
