So we are decorating FI's appartment (soon to be OUR appartment!) this weekend and I am having an issue with his bathroom. There is this big giant squared box that holds some kind of plumbing stuff right in between of the sink and toilet. It's just there. I don't know what to do with it. I was thinking of a basket with towels but even though it would look nice it's just silly since it's pretty darn far from the shower. So then I thought a cute magazine rack!I mean who doesn't love to read while they are handlin bussiness! but then I figured it's probably a faux-pas and people would think it's kinda tacky lol. how do you feel about magazines in the bathroom? Any suggestions on what to do with that giant waste of space?

We have a magazine basket in our downstairs 1/2 bath. Really its more of a place to keep older magazines until someone decides to recycle them :p It looks kinda like this but silver:

@Jenny: I've totally gone in with my laptop Embarassed. To be fair I only do it when I'm super busy (like studying for finals) and want to check facebook, weddingbee, googlereader etc.

I don't think it is a faux pas. Everyone knows reading goes hand-in-hand with poopin'. You're just being out and proud with is a'la Marshall from How I Met Your Mother, lol.

I don't think I would be ok with using towels that are stored immediately next to a toilet.  Thats not very sanitary.

I actually keep funny books in our guest bathroom for when we have guests. Things like "i can haz cheeseburger" and "lolcats" and "Simon's cat". i've seen some nice magazine racks for bathrooms (i just leave mine behind the toilet though!). I think reading materials+bathrooms go hand in hand.

Am I the only person who doesn't read on the toilet?  I've tried, but just can't!  I need to concentrate, then get outta there!  I do tweeze in there sometimes though...

DH doesn't read in there either, actually.  We have no magazines in there.  Maybe I am a bad hostess?  :)

My ex once said "if there is nothing to read, sometimes I will just pick up a shampoo bottle and read the ingredients."  um, yea.

lol  Magazines in the bathroom are totally fine!  Or at least I hope they are!  At our old house we had them in the guest bathroom but not our own.  And Jenny, babyboo's not the only one.  I've totally taken my laptop in with me but I prefer books.

I must be the only one who thinks it's gross to keep reading material in the bathroom...

I know what you mean. We totally have the new newspapers in our bathroom but we totally clean them out when his family is over. I don't know if I'll ever feel comfy being so open with it around guests. *shrug*

You could always put a "bookshelf" - one with lots of little cubbies in it.  That way you could fill it with towels, magazines, as well as cute bathroom stuff.

@Heathahh  I'm with you. I have no desire to read in the bathroom..in fact, it grosses me out a bit. I want to get done and get out!

I think the magazines are ok, I feel like it's pretty acceptable overall.  I also agree with someone above that it would be much more sanitary to have mags than towels since it will be next to the toilet.

@Heathaah--"My ex once said "if there is nothing to read, sometimes I will just pick up a shampoo bottle and read the ingredients."  um, yea."  I am so guilty of this! I can't tell you how many times I've done it hahaha.

I ALWAYS read in the bathroom.  I swear I almost can't go without reading.  And yes, I take my laptop.  All the time.  I don't, you know, wipe and type, that's gross.  But before that needs to happen, I've got my laptop right there.

I don't use reading materials in other people's bathrooms though because I don't know if they handle them after wiping, I think that's gross!  And it's not like I'm going to ask them...

A magazine rack would work for me in my bathroom if FI and I agreed that we only used before wiping, but I'd have to hide it when guests came so they didn't 'spoil' them. Tongue out

    I'm totally nuts, I know.

this thread made me laugh :p I think it's ok to keep a magazine rack in there. I too don't like to read on the toilet. I do my business then leave. Reading material near toilets always feels tainted by germies to me. Might be handy while I wait for a face mask or nails to try though! heh oh, and DH has wanted to take my laptop into the bathroom with him before, but I've had to say no... usually he plays games on his psp instead. It's something I'll never understand.
