No and only if you want them to have purses that match.  There are some really cute ones out there on Etsy, but in no way is this accessory required.

Thanks now I have another question, assuming they HAVE some kind of purse, as do I for that matter...what do we do with them during the wedding ceremony?  ONLY I have a place to change in this giant cathedral, no one else is allowed (not my rule)

I don't think it matters whether they have matching purses. Mine certainly won't. (Matching) purses are a popular bridesmaid gift, however, which is probably where you've seen it done.

i totally cannot go anywhere without some sort of bag. not only do i need it for fashions sake, but there are so many things i feel like i have to carry all the time. ha. you certainly don't have to buy them matching purses, but if you want to think about that as a gift, it might be nice. a small clutch gives them somewhere to store their camera, id, money, lipgloss, tampons, etc. if you don't buy one, i think they'll probably bring their own and that's totally fine - the bags aren't in the pictures anyway!

As I had just experienced being a bridesmaid 2 months ago, where the bride required us to have purses, ivory-colored, no less..(remember my whining??), turns out I didn't need one afterall...it stayed in my other bag, that I kept my change of clothes in before the wedding..besides, who's going to carry it and what would you need it for walking down the aisle. Granted, I had my camera in there but unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to whip it out b/c again, who's going to want to carry it for me while I'm wakling down the aisle. (I didn't bring a date with me to the wedding) I did have it but it stayed in my other bag the entire time, in the trunk of the limo.  (after the wedding and the pictures, the limo driver dropped all the bags off in a corner of the reception hall.  So unless your bridesmaids are having their dates carry it for them, there's really no point.

I found some cute ones.  click on my name and it will take to blog.  I found some adorable ones from an etsy seller for about 20 bucks each and they clearly look much more expensive.  she also has an online boutique not affiliated w/etsy too and more choices.

You're not allowed to have anyone else in the room to change in?  They really expect you to put on your dress by your self?  Not an easy thing to do.

During the actual wedding, the little bags end up in the car, or in the changing room.  Since the BMs don't carry them up the aisle, and don't have anywhere to sit in a pew, you don't get any use out of them.  And seriously - your BMs hopefully aren't going to be checking their lip gloss, or getting out a piece of gum during the ceremony anyway.

At the reception, the little bags sit on the tables, like they do at any party.  So IMO it doesn't matter if they match, unless you really, really want a photo of your BMs with matching bags.

Thank you THE CAR-so obvious but I didnt think about it!

As for the changing question  I assume I can have someone help me but they said NO ONE but the bride can change at the cathedral.  So I took that to mean the BM's couldnt be in my room or stashing their bags.
