Um, can the theme of our wedding be "cake"?

So, our wedding has never had a "theme" - I've seen the ones where everything has lilies or gingham or birds or whatnot, but nothing ever really jumped out and said "us".  As we're planning, though I'm realizing that we are going to end up having a ton of cake at our wedding, and it's sort of becoming a de facto theme.  I wanted to see if you ladies think it's going to be too much cake in one weekend.  Just in case anyone is going to ask - there are no diabetics or people with gluten intolerance or anyone else with a restricted diet coming to the wedding, so there's nobody who would have to look at all the cake-y goodness and not be able to enjoy.  Also, even though the wedding is in July, everything will be inside in the A/C so no worrys about eating cake in the heat.

The first cake the guests will get is going to be a mason jar full of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting in everyone's out of town bags.  I wanted a little treat for people, since nearly everyone is coming for out of town, and since red velvet is one of my favorite cakes, and our main color is burgundy, it's just a perfect fit.

For our rehersal dinner, we wanted to be able to invite all of our guests, since everyone is coming in from out of town and most people will be arriving Friday night.  We didn't want to do another full plated dinner ($$) so we decided to do a champagne and dessert welcome reception.  We'll have champagne, mixers for the champagne, a candy bar, and 4 or 5 different kinds of cakes.  These are seriously awesome cakes - like a chocolate cake sprinkled with brandy, filled with chocolate brandy buttercream, covered in ganache and topped with truffles.  Yeah.

Now we're looking at our reception, and I have an idea that we might love, but also might make cake the official theme of our wedding.  This seems irrelevant, but I'm going somewhere I promise - I don't really have a strong preference for centerpiece flowers.  Sure, they're lovely, but I like a very minimal style, and most of the centerpieces I'm leaning toward are the kind with a few blooms with lots of water.  Also, my mom used to be a professional wedding cake decorator, so I love a ton of different decorating styles.  I'm having a hard time picking just one when there are so many pretty options out there.  We're also struggling to decide on just one flavor for the cake, because our caterer keeps throwing out awesome options and we want all of them!  Enter the cake centerpiece.  We could have a small cake at each table!  Each one would be a different flavor, and decorated differently, and we could go around and cut the first piece out of each one, to make sure we have face time with every table of guests!  We'd love having all the flavors of cake more than just having flowers, and since everyone's from out of town, no one's going to be able to take the centerpieces home with them anyway.  Plus, this would save us the ~$600 currently budgeted for flower centerpieces!

But, would cake in the out of town bags, and at the welcome reception, and on every table be too much cake?  I think that cake is awesome, and that having all of the different flavors would be fun and exciting, but if you were a guest, would you think it's cake overload?

I like the idea of having different cakes as centerpieces at the wedding.  Could you also have a fruit or cheese tray at the rehearsal dinner?

i think its a uniqe idea... dont think of it in terms of a lot of cake, think of it in terms of a theme. has anyone ever showed up at a wedding that is nicely decorated and said that's a lot of lillies, or, thats a lot of {insert theme color}. Unless you overdue the theme, which you can do with lillies, colors, OR cake, i think its a unique and trendy theme!

Well, that IS a lot of cake. But I personally don't think it's cake overload. If someone thinks it's too much, they just don't have to eat it all!

But it's your wedding so I say that you should do whatever you want!

ETA: I don't have a theme either. Maybe "bright colors" or "mismatched vintage stuff"

I LOVE cake, so I'm going to say yes, this is awesome.  There is no such thing as cake overload.

    I don't have a theme either.  I guess "spring".

Can I come to your wedding?  (Okay, I'll be on my honeymoon.  But for that much cakey goodness I'd almost be willing to cut it short...)

Haha!  Glad to hear I'm not the only cake lover!  Thanks for all the feedback guys!

@kaybee- Good idea about a cheese tray for the welcome reception!  I do love cheese, and it would be a nice compliment to the sweets.

@July- Yeah, we're definately not looking to go theme crazy. I just suddenly realized we were going to have so much cake, people might think it was our theme!  I agree that if we were doing cake invites and cake table numbers and cake bouquets that it could be a bit of an overload.  Although now that I mention it, a cake bouquet does sound kind of awesome... lol!

@danadelphia- Good point!  I guess it's easy to forget that guests don't have to partake in every. single. detail of the wedding if they don't want to.

@His Barista, @Chillmer, @mak418 - Yay for fellow cake fans!  Seriously, every time I think about the possibility of having over 15 different kinds of cake over the course of the weekend, I swoon.

Still love to get more feedback on this.  Any cake naysayers?

We didn't have a theme at all.  I don't think they are necessary really.  We had a few colors that we used throughout though.

So have fun with your ton of cake!  (Though all the guests will be bursting by the end I bet!)

I really like the idea of cake as centerpieces! It's so unique and it would give you a chance to get face time with all the guests.

I love cake!  I also love the ceneterpiece cake idea.  I went to a wedding that had it and loved it.  There were several different flavors, so we got to trade slices with other tables and we could cut it ourselves, so we each got how much cake we wanted!
