Today was my 2nd hair trial. The first was an updo that just wasn't me. I wanted my hair to look like this....

....but instead it looked like this... I only go to this woman because she is my aunt's best friend, my aunt pays., and this lady also serves as our caterer. I feel that she rushes and uses too much holding spray and gel. I'm not satisfied and my wedding is exactly a week away. My best friend from out of town is very skilled in hair styling and makeup and I feel like she would do a better job and I would feel more comfortable telling her what I do and don't like. What to do?!?

Seriously, it doesn't look bad at all.  It looks pretty, just not your vision.  It appears that the lady in the inspiration pic has more hair.  Perhaps she could add extensions and it would be longer and she would have more to work with?

But, it does look very nice.  About the only recommendation I would make is for the top to be a little looser....like your inspiration pic.

@MaggieMae - Thanks. I asked the hairstylist if she thought I needed more hair and she said no. I also thought it looked a little smooshed. Uuughh!!!!

I don't think it looks that bad but if you want it to look like the inspiration picture, I think you will need extensions added in.  I would consider going to a different stylist, even if you have to pay so that she can add in extensions like you asked.

I would say go with the friend. Explain to your aunt first that you want her friend to focus on your catering and that a friend offered to do your hair and makeup free of charge (even if you are paying her). Then your aunt can relay the message for you and let you follow up to confirm. I understand that it's your wedding day and you don't want to have to suffer in silence b/c you don't want to hurt anyone's feeling. You picked out a beautiful hairstyle and if your friend can pull it off....by all means let her. It's your time to shine and you have to be comfortable with your look on your day.

It looks nice, but I agree, if you're set on the inspiration pic, she's gonna have to give you some more hair. I'm having about 1000 lbs of hair added... I'm quite excited.

@scissors - lol at 1000lbs. I just feel like she completely ignored the inspiration pic and took the liberty to do what she wanted. I know hair can be added in but even with, she still can't do whatever she wants.

It looks like your trial is missing the side wave.  I think it could be done without extensions, the tips of your hair in the side wave just need to be tucked into the chignon.  If it's the volume you want more of, then you need some hair added.  Hopefully a bit less than 1000 lbs.  My hair guy complained that I had too much/too thick hair.  We can't win.

Ok, I'm going to go ahead and say that I think she got in a hurry and just did what she wanted to do. I think there is too much spritz and the swoop needs some more attention. I know that as brides of color we often want that smooth look, but old school folks sometimes think a bottle of Pump it Up and a fine tooth comb is the only way to get that... Lies I say.

I think that the style is doable on your hair without extensions, but using too much of a styling aid is going to weigh your hair down and deplete some of your hair's body and volume. You may have to sacrifice a little of that if you are concerned about frizzies, but I still think that it can be done. I would try the friend to see what she can do if you have time for a trial. Whether or not she can recreate the style exactly, I still think it is worth a try if you have time before the wedding.

Ultimately, you have more than one option for a stylist. I would try them both and pick from your favorite.

This is tough b/c you don't want to offend your family friend. See if she can make more of what girls state above, and if not tell her your friend really wants to help you out and be apart of your wedding day. Since your Aunt's friend is also the caterer she might just be happy she isn't also doing your hair. (This might be a less offensive way to get your friend to do the job). BUT can your friend do it, and when is she available. I would say if you have the cash find someone professional. It is worth it!

You need to be happy with your hair, so keep searching until you are happy. ;)

    Good luck!

If I wasn't happy with the trial and I felt the stylist wasn't listening to me, I'd definately go with someone else. I could forgive if a few little things went wrong on my wedding day, but if I didn't feel great about my hair, make-up or dress, it would really affect my big day.

It isn't too bad, it's just quite harsh, the inspiration pics are just a bit softer. Why not just get your friend to try and then decide after, you can say to either of them that you prefer the others way of doing it.
