My SO was randomly, spur of the moment fired from his last job. On his paperwork there was a number to call for FREE legal help and he was able to fax all of his discharge papers, letters from unemployment, etc. to this lawyer and the lawyer then would be on the conference calls when he’d have these hearings. They were incredibly stressful, but at least he had someone there that knew his case and knew the ways of the hearing. Look on your unemployment papers from the state.

I’ve sat in on unemployment hearings on the employer’s side; generally, if we go through the effort of contesting a claim, we’re going to show up to hearing.  🙁  I’m sorry, that’s probably not what you want to hear.  There’s always a chance they won’t show up because they’re short staffed, too busy, etc…, but I think you should probably prepare for a full hearing.

Can you consult an employment/labor lawyer?  Even just a session or two might point you in the right direction on how to defend your claim.

@kay01:  Oh I misread.  🙁  Sorry.  I hope things work out in your favor.  I know that CA does offer payment plans, so if you do have to repay your claims, you might not have to do it all in one chunk.  I hope they rule in your favor, though!

Well that’s good news! Good luck with the rest of the ruling!
