I'm having my reception at the Upper Crust (www.tucnyc.com). Its a small space (80 for sit down dinner, 120 for a "supper buffet") on the first floor. Its basically a blank space that you can do with whatever you want with. The Upper Crust was a caterer first (and still is) so the food is supposed to be amazing (havent tasted it yet but they have done parties for the food network). They say that their weddings typically cost between $30-$40k which includes food, drink, linens, band and flowers I think. Good luck!
A band that was recommended by the guys at the upper crust. They arent a "wedding band" - so I am not sure how to find them on the internet!
My soon-to-be BIL and his wife got married at 632 on Hudson (www.632onhudson.com), and it was a really cool space and an unusual reception. I think they had about 90-100 people. The building is an old house, with rooms off a central staircase and a gorgeous roof garden. Since none of the rooms is big enough to hold all 90 guests, the reception had the feel of a relaxed house party, with dancing in the central foyer. You would have to hire an outside caterer, but I think the house has so much ambiance you could save on decorations (I think they only had bouquets, for example--no centerpieces).
Thank you so much for the info - I will check it out and let you know - it sounds really great!!
thank you - i will check it out. Any photographers you think I should check out?
We are using Kenny Pang - his pictures are amazing! Check out his blog, as opposed to his website - pics are much better there. www.kennypang.com
We used Angelica Glass!
www.angelicaglass.com or http://angelicaglass.bigfolioblog.com. Amazing work.
i used Kenny Pang for my epics. We're on his blog!! I love him! Angelica Glass is also a popular one...as is Henry Chan, Something In Blue and Be Creative Photography. All have blogs I check on a regular basis!
We're having an at home reception at the penthouse in the Hotel on Rivington. It's a really chic and unique space. I don't think it would be great for a sit down dinner, but for a unique cocktail party (which is what we are having) it's great. And it has a nice rooftop terrace!
632 Hudson was a perfect choice!! The only problem they are booked for the date that I need. Everything about it I loved - the rooftop terrace - the fact that it was an intimate venue - more like being in someone's house. I was so disapointed. Please let me know if anyone has any other suggestions that you think I should look into - thanks so much for all of your suggestions!!!
Thank you so much for the Penthouse @ Rivington suggestion - I am going to check that out.
Still searching - please let me know if there is anything else you think I should look into.
I'm sorry that 632 on Hudson wasn't available for you. Here are other suggestions:
House of the Redeemer: http://www.houseoftheredeemer.org/index.html
I haven't seen this place personally, but someone recommended it to me when I was looking for a space. I didn't go look because it was too small for what I needed, but it could work for you. Although looking at their website now, they may not be open on the date you need :-(.
Alger House: http://www.greenmansionscatering.com/alger.php
Another old house, with a more romantic character than 632 on Hudson (and no roof deck, alas). The same company also rents the Manhattan Penthouse, which is not as quaint but does have really spectacular city views. http://www.greenmansionscatering.com/penthouse.php?p=reception Both of these were serious contenders for us, though Alger House was too small in the end.
Other places I thought of but didn't go see because of space issues:
Seamen's Institute Top Deck: http://www.seamenschurch.org/431.asp
New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park: http://www.nyrp.org/cafe/
If you would consider outside of Manhattan, someone above recommended the Foundry, which I also think is a really cool space, though I did not go see it because we were determined to stay in Manhattan: http://www.thefoundry.info/
I adore EN japanese brasserie in the West Village. It would be a gorgeous space for a special event. The main room is extraordinary- the photos don't do it justice. And the food is exquisite. It's restaurant week, so it's an opportune time to make a visit.
Thanks so much. I am going to check it out. I am trying to see if I can move my date so that I can book 364 Hudson. I love the space - it is just perfect - if anyone else had any other ideas let me know - just in case that does not work out. Thank you so much.
Booked 632. Now to find a caterer. I am looking to do more of a cocktail style reception - any suggestions who could be great but not be crazy in price?

I wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestions on a really unique - chic - intimate reception site in NYC. I am planning my reception for the end of June. Struggling fashion designer with champagne taste but want to keep costs down where I can. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!!!
