This might sound utterly ridiculous, and I know it is, but my FI is so intensely whimsical and random that I had to make some compromises...
#1: We're having Legos on the tables. No, there won't be that many kids at the wedding, but he wants to have a child-like feel to the whole ordeal. I agree in that I don't want our wedding to be this overly elegant, somber experience, so I allowed him this. I think it'll actually make the tables look colorful and bright, which is what I'm going for overall, so this isn't too bad.
#2: And you'll all laugh, but it was this or godforsaken carnival games of some kind...we're going to have a pinata or two (with favors inside). His idea is to set them up and have each of the married couples (we know almost no single people) come up, decide who will be blindfolded, and have the other mate try and tell them where they need to step, where they need to hit, etc. It's a "memory making moment," apparently. I just don't want it to seem like a kid's birthday party. He does not seem to particularly care about the ambience of the thing. Groan.
The whole wedding is going to be bright, colorful, and FUN. Sunflowers in the bouquets, a cupcake tower, we'll serve lemonade, have goldfish and daisies on the tables...it'll be unique, that's for sure! :)
We playfully toyed with the idea of having a carnival theme. We were going to have elephant ears, corn dogs and games! However, we decided against it because we didn't want everything and everyone to smell like oil. Plus, the only part of it that I was really keen on was the corndog part lol. I LOVE corn dogs! lol
Oh, I CANNOT let my FI read your comment, teris!! Haha! He'd be too thrilled. We've toyed with the idea of balloons, a candy buffet, and playing all sorts of silly music that we adore but may not set the right tone for the wedding. I should probably relax a little more on this- it's our day after all. Sometimes I think I get a little too wrapped up in trying to please everyone else that I forget that this is my wedding day and I'm the one who will have to remember it forever!!
Instead of the traditional candy buffet for dessert table we are having a hostess treat buffet. Just imagine buckets full of twinkies, ho-ho, snowballs and ding dongs! A perfect treat for after a long night of dancing and drinking!
Oh I really want to steal Mrs. Hydrangea's idea of the gelato cart in place of the groom's cake!
I'm obsessed with learning new ideas to make our wedding our own. A few things we are doing are a faux photo booth with a chalkboard for our guests to write on and pose with in the pictures ( I read a blog about a bride who did this and the guest poses were awesome next to their fun comments on the chalkboard.) I'm also adding memory boxes like Mrs. Cream Puff did for her wedding!
@AnnieAAA.. I love love love the chalkboard idea. We were planning on doing a DIY photobooth and a wish tree so I could later make a scrapbook with each guests photo and wish but this idea combines and simplifies.. thanks!!
We are planning on doing a correographed first dance. That was his first wedding suggestion, which is super cute. We will also be doing a desert bar with a few one teired cakes and lots of other treats. Our newest idea is to do an indoor / outdoor (barn or pavillion) reception and having a roasted hog as our main entree. We have friends who own a hog farm and a smoker. We just have to find a way to do this without it coming off too "Redneck Wedding" (if you've seen the show you'll know what I mean.. haha).
rnc620 we are having our first dance choreographed as well. We are also having a choreographed Bridal Party dance. We will have a dessert bar that will be a mix of many small desserts, like mini cheesecakes, and cookies, but there will also be a mix of candy.
We are doing a photo booth guestbook and lastly because we want the guest to feel like celebrities at our reception. We are hiring fake paparazzi to snap random photos of people. Plus we want to incorporate some fun prizes for people during the reception like dance offs and random acts of craziness
I'm so glad I checked this post again! @ dmitchell08 I am stealing your idea of dance offs and other crazy acts & I love the idea of giving fun prizes too! I really want our wedding to be VERY fun and that is a great way to loosen people up! I love it!
Also, my FI and I were going to do a few of our "classic dance moves" like the fisherman & the fish as our first dance, but now I want us to learn the Dirty Dancing "I've had the time of my life" dance and do that! We really are over the top goofy people, well me more then my FI lol :)
We are doing interactive games between each course of the meal. I went to a french wedding where they did that and it was the most fun! I love the idea that the reception is more than just a dinner party!
@vistagirl - What kind of interactive games? That sounds fun!
@AnnieAAA - I would love to learn the "Time of My Life" dance too but it wouldn't be the same without the lift at the end and I would be too afraid my dress would rip open or something! Plus, FI is same height as me and would never be able to do it!
Oooooooh gelato..mmm! I have wicked pms right now.
I'm still deciding on what to do. Most likely, if she's well enough to attend, we'll have a second cake for my grandparents who are celebrating late this summer their 70TH wedding anniversary! That will make the day special for everybody and most of all for them, two people I love more than words can convey.
we are planning on having a photobooth with lots of fun props :)
We did the toasts, formal dances, and cake cutting earlier in the evening. So when the real dancing started I changed into a black dress. I know it may seem odd but I just love little black dresses and I did wear a floor length white gown to the rehersal dinner so I figured I had earned the right to wear black! I attached a pic.

I also got some cool masquerade-type felt moustaches for fun reception pics!

The best wedding game we are playing is a combo of musical chairs and a scavenger hunt. Here is how it goes-
find a bridesmaid or groomsman who knows a lot of your guests and is a good public speaker and ask them to run it.
there are 12 months so you assign an activity to each month like going out to a movie or going for dessert, going on a hike etc.
then you need 13 guests. go for a blend and if you can try to pick one from each table or social group, it lets tables root for people they know.
now you set up 12 chairs musical chairs style, and the people are all in the middle. you say an object and the guests have to go get it and get a chair. every round that someone is out, they take the couple for the thing for that month
so for example if they had to get a water glass they all go out and the last to get one doesn't have a chair. now they are out and they get january so they have to take the couple ice skating.
the winner gets the couple to take them out in the month of the anniversary.
it rocks and you get awesome photos. we did this at my friends wedding and she plays hockey so it got a little rough. we have a great photo of a bridesmaid diving for a chair!
@ tenmylove: LOL if we decide to do this we would be skipping out on the lift (my FI is not that coordinated to do that haha! Plus is would be so scary!) but we're going to build it up to make all of our guest think "this is crazy!" but when I run to him he'll just pick me up and swing me around, something cute like that
We're having a magician and other live entertainment at different times. We're also providing a selection of silly board games in the lounge area for late night activities.
I wanna hear more unique ideas people are doing for their wedding!! I need inspiration!
