I actually had made my save the dates all from the store Michael's.
I too am going for the fall theme so I bought some clear fall-themed like stamps, neutral card stock paper and some brown/black sharpies. Just wrote a little note to wish my future guests a happy valentine's day as well as a save the date. Everything was hand written and done by hand. I've gotten some great response from it thus far.
If you have some sort of idea you should definitely play off of it and do it yourself. its very possible.
Mine were based on the Casablanca movie poster. We did it ourselves in Photoshop, maybe customization is the way for you to go to as well?
for the 20th time here in weddingbee lol here is my std... we didnt find anythign we like and got the advice from another bee to make the video... our family and friends loved it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS3v7uTjQHY
I would check on etsy.com. We had ours designed there--we did a custom map of nyc, with different spots and attractions on it that are meaningful to us.
We ordered Scractch off Save the dates from Etsy seller unlesssomeonelikeyou. They were fun and unique, we had our date/city under the scratch off sticker so the STDs were interactive! We got many compliments on them!
I will post a link to one of her postings of the specific design we chose, but she has a few different designs. You could have her change the hearts and/or stars to leaves to make it more fallish or you could just switch up the colors!?

Ahhh @mizrunzou, we saw those too and LOVED them. We ultimately went with different ones, but I think the scratch off idea is so cute and original. I would love to get a save the save the date like that :)
@hilsy - - Thanks! Our guest enjoyed them...although, a few called FI to ask if they WON a trip to our city...haha.
I LOVE ETSY! I've ended up getting my invites, STDs, and jewelry from there so far!
I almost did 3D ones, but nixed the idea after my sis blew our cover. I have a great idea for them but since they're not done yet, I don't want to share out loud. PM me if you want to know :)
For anyone else curious, I'll probably be posting them on my blog in about a week. Woo!
Other random ideas that we almost used but didn't: Pop-up cards, Stickers to mark the date on the calendar, sending small calendars with the date circled, video STD, and spinning-wheel STD (was in the Destination Weddings Martha magazine).
Good luck!
We had Caricatures drawn by a friend with the background where he purposed and we are doing a 20s theme wedding so im in a flapper dress and hes in a suit. Everyone loved them!
Ours were using a template that we found on weddingchicks.com. You can put whatever photo you like in, we decided to use a sketch. My save the dates went out today!! :D http://www.weddingchicks.com/wedding-chicks/diy-templates/18262/free-photo-calendar-save-the-date-card/ template can be found with that link.

Here are ours! I just designed a simple card and printed it on my Gocco - though they could have been printed on a regular printer too. I spent hours glueing and tying the ribbons to play up the "tying the knot" theme.
@Magenta - I love your Save the Dates!
wow everyone has really nice ones! I saw that martha stewart one! I actually liked that one a lot, I thought about adding a fall leaf or two to it...I showed the fiance...he shut me down :( I was like you have no taste geez lol The scratch off ones are really cool too! I've been trying to google save the dates for fall.. nothing as of yet
We're having a book themed wedding, so we printed these out on cardstock paper and cut them to size. We sent those out with our Christmas cards to our OOT guests. For our close friends and family who live in the city, we e-mailed them a digi copy. They loved them!
If you wanted to make the scratch off ones yourself, I saw this tutorial:
these were our save the dates:

i wanted something that wasn't a magnet, but was useful. they are stickers and i modeled it after the martha stewart ones that i found.
I just saw these fall save the dates on my designers blog and thought they were super cute! not terribly unique, but i liked the design.
These are my save the dates! I found them after searching for hours to find something just right. The other designs by the same etsy seller are also super-cute.
@mizrunzou - we're using the scratch off save the dates as well! I'm glad to hear your guests liked them. I can't wait to send ours out.
I had mine created on etsy by an amazing seller - ellothere. I printed them myself on super swoony vellum paper and used an embossing label maker to address them. I wound up editing the text a little to make it more modern than this draft.

This was our save the date. It's a stock photo from the Magnet Street website. They turned out great!
