i’d like to incorporate a unity candle into my wedding ceremony, but i’m not sure how to go about it. does the florist usually provide the candles? our church is not going to provide the candles but they say they have a wooden table that we can use to set it up. i thought unity candles were usually on freestanding candelabras? also, how do the mothers light the candles? do they use matches? i am so clueless – please help!

i am no expert, but i believe these candles are by the bride.
that being said, there are tons of candles marketed at "unity candles" but you could get the same effect with any pillar candle and 2 tapers.
this would be a great opportunity to diy something fairly simple and then you could have a very personalized unity candle for very little dough.
as far as what is used to light the tapers? i have always seen people use the long lighters. you know the lighter that you hold in your hand with the long tube thingy? i see them all the time in in that area where you wait inline at grocery stores or big box stores.

Zippo is now making those big candle lighters now. They’re about $10 but it might be worth it since they look really nice and might be more reliable. I saw them at Bath and Body Works last night, and have seen them at Michaels and Bed Bath and Beyond before. Good luck! I’ve seen so many cool DIY things for unity candles! They sky’s really the limit!

Our mothers used matches to light the unity candles.. haha.. classy, right? 🙂
We had to provide the candles, and like what getmarriedforless said, you can buy "unity candles" but they are overpriced, like most wedding items, and I think you could DIY something for a lot less. You could wrap ribbons around the base of your candles in your colors, with silk flowers tucked in. I’ve seen people use those little stick on crystals to decorate the middle candle with their monogram. I just googled "DIY unity candle" and saw a lot of pretty ideas!

Typically the taper candles you use to light your unity candle can be lit off any altar candles.
I’m thinking of decorating my own unity candle as well, not quite sure how yet, but there are tons of ideas out there. You can decorate with gems, ribbon, a monogram, etc.
