I think a sewn in bra would be fine, but I would talk to your seamstress first and get her suggestions.
And um, the lingerie store probably advised against it so you would buy something from them instead :/
I originally had the sewn in cups in my dress but I didn't really think that they did anything to offer support and my dress gapped a little. Once I tried my dress on with a long waisted bra it fit so much better and gave the girls just the little push up that I needed.
@derbybride that's so helpful... except (pardon my naiveté) what is a long waisted bra? Is that like a bustier?
I'm wearing a bustier-type thing as well. I'm a bit bigger (C-cup) and wanted enough support, and the dress then rests on the boning of the bustier. Nothing is going ANYWHERE.
OK, this is very informative. But what type of bustier? I just found the MOST GORGEOUS SOFTEST looking one for only $300+
HA!
Any reasonably priced suggestions?
@lairdea: I have a longline bra like the one posted above. I got it at David's Bridal for about $75 (but that was 4 years ago so it is probably more expensive now).
The thing I have seen on the boards about having cups sewn in is that you can usually see them in the pictures because they show through. I would try the bustier or even just a strapless bra if it will work with your dress.
Here's the link for the one I bought from David's Bridal - it's $79. I had my first dress fitting tonight and I found the bra to be very comfortable.
I'm in a strapless dress and when I took it in to my alterations lady she said no cups and she didn't feel that I needed to wear a bra once she took it in a little on each side. So she pinned it and well she was right....so no bra or cups!
I have cups sewn into my dress, but I'm also wearing a NuBra for more cleavage.

What should I wear under my gown??
I had always thought that you should have a bra sown into a strapless dress, so that you don't pul at it all night. But my mom went to a lingerie store the other day and they strongly recommended against it (they wanted me to get stickies). What do you guys think!? what works best, and what is most affordable?
