I’m fairly new here on the bee. A little bit of backstory: my boyfriend and I have been talking about taking the next step and getting engaged for some time. We are as close as getting the setting made for the ring in the next week. We have been together for a year, but met six years ago in high school. We went our separate ways for college and happened to reconnect. We are both quite young, I am 22 and he is 23. However, I have a BA and am workin through a Master’s program while working a professional job, and the boyfriend is close to finishing his BS. We are mature and both been in relationships that were not satisfying. In other words, we know what we want.
My boyfriend told his brother that we were planning on getting engaged. His brother is normally the most supportive person. WELL…his brother was asking what the rush was and telling my boyfriend to tell the rest of the family (in hopes that they would talk him out of it). I’m a little floored by this…His brother knows me quite well. I guess I’m thinking, if he doesn’t support us now, he never will. I anticipate a worse reaction from the rest of his family.
Anybody dealt with this? It’s so discouraging. Makes me want to elope.
