- Wedding: September 2012
My husband and I were married in September and about a week ago, we received a substantial check from my aunt and uncle. This past Sunday night we (along with my father) were at their home for dinner. My uncle got quite intoxicated and after arguing with my father for some time about his decision to travel, he then turned to me to yell at me for owning two dogs. He told me I needed to get rid of them because the amount of money I spend on them could feed an entire village in Africa. I then defended my decision to have dogs and was thrown out of his house. My fathers family is a long line of alcoholics and I had never realized that my uncle had problems to the extent other relatives do. My husband points out that the same argument could be made regarding any expense one has and that his argument had no merit. The entire situation was quite unpleasant.
We had just deposited the check from him that day, or I simply would not have deposited after this unpleasant interaction. I am not comfortable keeping the money, but am not sure if it would make things worse to give it back with a note simply stating that upon further consideration we are not comfortable accepting a gift of that size.
What would you do?
