Do any of you have a non-traditional ring? If so what? Pearl? Amber? Emerald? Ruby? No ring at all? Opted for tattoos instead?
Hi! I have a princess cut sapphire with a surrounding square of diamonds at the "base", the sapphire is set rather high, which is fun. It's cool since sapphire is my birthstone and diamonds are his :)
We, as in all the readers since the Bees have already done so, should post pictures of our rings (or necklaces, earrings, tatoos, etc) not to compare, but because it's always fun to look at jewelry
I don't think this is SO unusual but it is a bit more unique than the diamond solitare. I have a three stone ring, the center stone is a light blue sapphire and the side stones are diamond. All three are princess cut. Actually, I've never seen another princess cut sapphire in a ring so maybe... :)
This isn't "unusual" in fact I'm sure it's quite common other then my friend who's a jeweler, made it just for me - from scracth - I even have the wax outline that was used to create the mold for my ring :-)
I found a picture in a magazine and he and FI made me what I wanted with the added details FI put in himself.
Sorry it's A: such a big pic and B: a nasty knuckle shot...lol
Natakie--I'd love to see yours!! I was writing my message when you posted so apparently I spoke too soon!
Hi Yiska, how neat, I love your ring, it's gorgeous! Ok, here is the only shot I have of it that's hosted on a web page, and it is at a bad angle, sorry!
How'd you guys get such nice shots of your ring??? Everytime I try with my camera it end up looking blurry.
Mine isn't unusual at all, but i just wanted to show off my bling bling....jk, sorta not really. =)
NorcalBride, the secret of taking ring shot is to not use the flash (you need natural light). The stone will bounce the light from your flash back thus causing the blur whiteness. My brother took the picture below with his fancy dandy camera without flash.

NorCalBride--use the Macro mode on your camera, use zoom.. unfortunately, it usually requires A LOT of light and will only turn out if you use flash which may wash things or get a reflection.
I don't have an e-ring. I just wanted a simple diamond wedding band. So, I don't get to wear a ring until May 31, 2008.
Sweeny--who is your friend that's the jeweler and where do they have a shop? That's so cool that you got a custom ring!
MagnoliaDiva--If that's what you wanted then GOOD! I'm sure people ask to see the ring and don't understand at all when you say you don't have one. I contemplated not having an e-ring too but in the end I decided that I wanted one.... I've heard it can be incredibly hard.
Yiska - 99% of the time when you say you are getting married, people's eyes AUTOMATICALLY go towards your hand and when they see my left hand empty, they all day, "WHERE IS YOUR RING?!". I say, "I don't have one" and then just look at them like, "WHAT?!" ![]()
I am 36 and he is 45. We are really not concerned what others think. LOL...we'd rather spend that money on something else.
It isn't "hard" more sore so bucking the "norm"....... people are FUNNY and SO pretentious. A ring does NOT define a marriage......
MagnoliaDiva--You clearly have your priorities in order! :) It's something I'm sure many of us forget in the flurry of wedding planning--the important thing is the marriage, not the wedding.
Yiska - His name is TR Crabtree and he's based out of Wester Wisconsin right now, with a studio in Eastern MN (very close the the state border...as you can tell)
Here's a link to his site:
He used to be a room mate of mine a long time ago when we all rented a house together (me and 2 of his friends and an old boyfriend of mine...weird I know but I stayed friends witht he room mates after they left and I stayed) I loved hanging out in his studio, I'd have a martini to drink and a big fat diamond on EACH finger....lol Not to mention the stuff he brought home in his diamondpouch....oo-la-la
Thanks for the tip... I love all your rings. So sparkley! Did guys get to pick out your ring? I think my ring's usual. Didn't take me long to upload the pictures.
I did pick mine out. :) The whole "getting engaged" process was just that for us..a process. we're both kind of careful decision makers and there was less of a proposal than a mutual agreement. Although when people ask, we kind of tell the story where he gave me the ring. :)
yes and no. Fiance was spending months picking them out...then he met my cousin whose inlaws own a jewelry store (he works there too). My cousin didn't quite remember him and took him for a ride with his price...fiance left and no ring. It then dawned on my cousin that he looks like my bf, then called me and my mom to ask about it (which i didn't know about)...but of course, i was curious, so i asked and surely enough, fiance was about shopping around for that beauty up there. After being caught, he took me to my cousin to pick out the ring that I want. Only he ended up picking the center stone and having it set on the band that i had my eyes on for months without my input what-so-ever. To my surprise, its turns out to be the same ring that i admired from pictures for months. I never liked jewelry (my profession involves my playing with dirt, literally, so it was really tough for him to get something i would wear.
He did good. I haven't taken it off since he put it on my finger!
Mine's unusual - it's a band made up of little circles, of both yellow and white gold, with little diamonds in the middle. Sounds wierd and is weird for an engagement ring I guess, but I can't find a picture online anywhere. If you imagine these little diamond circles being all the way around (and the same size as the middle one) with a textured gold outline on each one, you're vaguely there.
I helped choose it (picked three similar styles, FH made the final choice which was luckily my favourite) and will be using it as my wedding band also. I like it because it's sparkly but not crazy blingy, sits flat on my finger so doesn't catch on anything, and best of all - because it's the same all the way around, it doesn't matter how much I spin it around (which is a habit of mine with all rings).
i have a traditional diamond but i think my setting is unusual. we picked the stone first then found the best setting for it. the setting had to be altered twice and he didnt proposed with the ring because it wasn't ready.
its almost a tension set but now quite.

Most of these rings look traditional to me. Anyway, I ended up going traditional but in my search for a different ring I loved this san luis obispo jeweler: http://www.kevinmain.com/
Look through all the rings (the have traditional and non-traditional). Also THe Clay Pot in Brooklyn, NYC has really cool wedding rings.
We, like many others, chose to put our money elsewhere. I prefer flat or band rings, so I chose a wedding band for my e-ring. It looks much more $$$ than it cost.... it's the band on the left.

Although my ring is white gold with diamonds, I believe it's still somewhat unusual in style. It was designed by Frank Gehry forTiffany and Co, and the moment my FI saw it, he knew he had to get it for me :) Sometimes, he knows me better that I know myself!

Mine is similar to this ring, but lower profile. I needed a ring that doesn't stick up because I do too much where it could get scratched or snagged (dancing, skiing). I love the bezel setting. Elegant but bomb proof.
Like this one (same jeweler) but with round stone:
My husband got the setting without the center diamond because it has the same split design of my favorite necklace. It was made for a pear shaped diamond but he liked the marquee shape better. He got the diamond when he was in South Africa visiting a family friend. Diamonds are much less expensive when you buy them straight from the mine.
My husband also has a unique ring. It is tungsten carbide the hardest metal known to man. He wanted to be able to be rough with it but not have it get all scratched up. Plus, he is a machinist so the cutting bits are made out of the same material.

My ring was custom designed by Greenlake Jewelry in Seattle. The center stone is a spinel that we got from a gem collector (we are not really diamond people). It is platinum and gold with small diamonds and sapphire accent stones. It was really fun to work with a jeweler and have them come up with something totally unique. I have gotten a few comments like "is that seriously your engagement ring?" but it is easy to ignore snotty people.
NorCalBride– Your ring reminds me of one of my permanent pieces of jewelry, a ring my grandmother gave me when I was in high school. It was a gift from an old boyfriend, and unbeknowest to her {at the time} it was an engagement ring {photo below}. Apparently somewhere out there is a wedding band made of the three round diamonds in the leaf-like settings that fits around the top of it similar to yours. You can't tell from the photos, but the center stone sits really high which I think is kind of old-fashioned. When I say old-fashioned, I mean that in a good way! Retro settings are awesome.
My engagement ring is actual really traditional, although I've never seen an emerald cut diamond in person outside of a jewelry store. Photos of it are here on my blog. Love this topic, it's so cool to see other women's/men's choices of rings.
Gorgeous rings!!! I love all the colored stones. I wanted a colored stone, but my FI felt strongly about diamonds, so I have a yellow diamond. It is really clear lemon yellow, not canary yellow, so doesn't look like citrine or yellow sapphire... We really think its fun - people do a double take and ask what kind of stone it is. I don't have a good picture of it, but will see if I can't get one later tonight with all your tips on gem photography.
They're not ours, but these were the prettiest rings I've ever seen, obviously custom made.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/carpeicthus/544573962/
I love all those photos! Thanks for the picture taking tips, too. Granted, I've only tried to photograph my ring with my camera phone but when I finally use a regular camera, I'll hope to get a non-blurry shot. Anyway, my ring is unique and very us. On either side of the diamond, set into the band, are small squares of blue sea glass - that my fiance and I collected on the beach together. It's one of our favorite activities, and we have a cool jar with all the different colors and shapes of glass. So, he had the awesome idea to design the ring and it was a total surprise to me. It's all set in white gold, the size is perfect, and I love what it stands for. :-) I'm still thinking of ideas for our wedding bands - something that will complement the creative style and be meaningful for us.
I don't have a picture of mine, but my engagement ring is a cushion cut diamond with diamond accents on the side. The wedding band has alternating diamonds and sapphires all the way around. Not so unusual, but I always get comments on the cut of my ring, cushion cut isn't too popular. Also, mine is 18k yellow gold, so people notice it.
I have a yellow gold oval cut sapphire with two diamond sidestones.. it's gorgeous and FI picked it out all by himself! Ok, well, I coached him a little beforehand, but I was not involved in the shopping process at all. :)
kallisti - yours is too cool!!
haselwand - your grandmother's ring is what I always envisioned if I could have any ring I wanted. It's neat to see it for real!
FI and I decided to keep things really simple. I can be a bit of a klutz and take off jewelry and not always remember just where it is.
My ring is sterling silver with a pink tourmaline stone. We found it at an art fair last summer, and the quest for it alone was a memorable story. We're really happy with it, because it's got a lot of character for not being what you usually expect with e-rings.
kallisti-- I love your ring! beautiful!
my ring is very traditional, but i love it something fierce.
Mine is a white sapphire in a white gold "wave" setting that was designed and made for me by our good friend who is a jeweler. We live in Hawaii and spend tons of time on the water, and I love the symbolism of the wave - powerful and never ending. I am so cheesy!
My FI and I wanted something that was more socially conscious than a diamond. The sapphire is flawless and has lots of sparkle - it was also more affordable, and I love telling people how he chose it and helped design the ring. It is really low-profile too, which is perfect for my active life. Our jeweler friend is also making my wedding band, which will be blue and white sapphires in an organically shaped white gold band.
I wish I could post a pic, because I love showing it off!
I think mine is a bit untraditional for an engagement ring, but everybody says it's "very me." I LOVE pearls and think they're classic, so I told the FI that I wanted a pearl engagement ring, but still wanted diamonds involved in it somehow. Here's a link to it on my blog.
