Bee’s I need your advice..
While things seem to be going a little smoother in the planning process for our October 2012 destination wedding, one thing is not-my stress over affordable accomodations for our guests.
Charleston, SC does tend to have higher hotel prices on average but it seems like the weekend of our wedding is especially high. There are options outside of the historic district for those that have a car or rent one($100 and below) but for those wanting to stay in the historic district prices average for Fri/Sat 200 a night. We were able to reserve the cheapest rooms in the hotel we’re staying at (195 fri/sat, 155 sun) but that is only 6 rooms. There is a Days Inn that has been averaging 140 but dips down to 103 once in awhile in the historic district. All of our guests are coming from out of town. No matter where we had the wedding it would have been a destination wedding for most (friends and family up and own the east coast). I put all of this information on our wedding website.
I just feel so guilty that the hotels are so expensive and so worried that no one will come because they can’t afford it. Friends have told me that I can’t worry about it and that people are adults and can make their own decisions on travel, I just feel so stressed about it all the time. Any advice or thoughts? Has anyone else experienced this?

I agree with your friends – you can’t worry about it. People will attend if they can. And I think with 6+ months notice, you’ve given them plenty of time to save the money.

Depending on how many guests want to stay out side the district could they possibly share a rented van or a shuttle service?
Also if tht one particular weekend seems particularly high you may want to call the hotels and see what is going on. If there is a large convention or some town extravaganza going on you are going to have more things to worry about than guest room rates.
just a thought

There is a small convention but overall nothing major.

I hear you… This issue is the most stressful part of the wedding planning for me, too. I thought Sept would be much better than summer pricing, but the nearest major chain hotel near our Outer Banks is going for $320 a night!! So hopefully that will make you feel better about your rates! 🙂
I’m coping by helping friends stay together in rental houses – much for affordable at more like $300 each bedroom for the week. But of course no one will really stay that long to get their money’s worth…
Anyway, I completely know how you feel!! Sorry I don’t have a magic cure to make it less stressful. Your friends’ advice sounds good – people will make their decisions themselves. And Charleston is such an awesome place to visit, so people can choose to really enjoy the city in addition to your wedding.

My destination wedding was possible for my guest because my maid of honor rented a huge house for about 14 guest to stay in.
It was awesome and they paid only $150.00 each for 4 days down on the Bahamas in a HUGE house with a pool.
There are tons of folks who rent out their homes in Charleston- You could get a great place downtown on Broad St.
Look on home away from home ?
Just a thought 🙂

That can be really stressful but if this is what you want for your wedding you can’t let that bother you. The people that want to be there will find a way to be there. I have been to Charleston, SC and surrounding areas and it isn’t so expensive that some people can’t make it work. I am getting married in Mexico and have had to listen to many negative comments about how I am having to go somewhere that is expensive and it sucks but if people want to go they will make it work. Good luck!!

don’t stress out. We have the same problem, our wedding is mid june becasue that was the best time for our immediate families to travel up here to Maine. It also happens to be right when tourist season starts ( it’s a little before peak season) the hotel rooms in the city are between $200-$400 a night. We decided not to book a block of rooms and instead just provide a list of hotels on an info card and let people make their own decisions. There are less expensive hotels outside the downtown area so i know some people will stay there and drive the 20 minutes in for the day. There is so much to “stress” about that I just decided not to make this worth worrying about.
breathe! if you wed-it they will come
