Had to get up to let the doggie out to pee. Then had to check weddingbee- I am officially addicted.
I'm up too. Before 7 AM. Mr Snow was determined that we go to bed early so we'd be up really early to cook. So here I am....and he's still in bed. Hah.
I am up and already knee deep in chores! My wonderful sisters came over yesterday and helped finish our dinning room painting and various other things that had to get done for today. My goal: clean the top floor!
i am up but it's not that early and it's because i am at work, up here in canada!
happy thanksgiving to all the american bees!!!!!! :)
I sprained my wrist kneading dough! I called my mom (and proceded to cry cause she's 400 miles away) and was like "THIS IS HARD!!!" and she goes, "why don't you just put it in the Kitchen Aid with your dough hook?"
... because I'm trying to make them AUTHENTIC!!! Like my grandma makes.
I went to lunch with my mom yesterday and she told me her oven was broken! So I ended up driving to her house to pick up the turkey, and then had to wake up early and put it in the oven about half an hour ago.
I brined it last night - in triple layered trash bags and a giant bucket because we didn't have time or the resources to brave the stores to get a brining bag and the 20 pound turkey is bigger than all of our pots.
It's in the 500 degree oven for a few more minutes, then I drop the temperature for three hours.. and I am SO going back to sleep!!
But I still have to make the sweet potatos! And then transport it all to my parents, an hour away!
Me too!! I had to go to the store to get the fixings for my mom's infamous lemon meringue pie!! I finished cooking the hen yesterday and am making the dressing and the rest of the sides today... I have my cornbread in the oven as we speak :D
Up and at 'em! I need to flip the turkey in its brine, then take a shower and get started on the rest of the food. Making a run to Sbux too, thank god they're open on Thanksgiving.
Last night I made the mac and cheese (which had to be rescued, but it worked!), green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole and cranberries using Pengy's cranberry recipe (and they are AWESOME, but I made them without the Grand Marnier and extra OJ), brined the turkey and watched Four Christmases (cute movie).
Happy turkey day, WB friends!
OMG SBUX IS OPEN?! no one told me?! Mmmmmmmmm the mac and cheese sounds yummy!! i decided to do crawfish fettucine instead of mac... hmmm is that a mistake... i still have time to decide lol!! seriously i think if i don't throw some cajun style something in here M will revolt lol!!! i have used a lot of cajun seasoning so he should be okay maybne....
Wow, your Thanksgivings sound great, friends! I actually got to sleep in late, till almost 9:30. Good thing about having your ILs cooking for you!
I bought most of my remaining supplies last night which included a meat thermometer and turkey baster. The turkey has been defrosting for a week in the fridge so it should be ready to cook today.
To all those who have never cooked a turkey before, DO NOT cook a frozen turkey in a vat of boiling water. It will blow up! If you need one that's already de-thawed go to your local grocery store because they may be available. Otherwise, there's always ham or prime rib which is just as delicious!
@Gilneas They make bags especially for brining???? We always do the trash bags and then stick it in one of the drawers in the fridge.
@JoJo- Yup! http://www.thekitchenstore.com/761995007701.html
My friend owns a kitchen store and has been talking them up for the past few weeks. If I had known I was brining a turkey, I would have stopped by there to pick one up... this turkey was a monster and leaked through my triple bagged grocery bags :(
I'm letting my stuffing and sweet potato casseroles come to room temperature, and after we finish watching Harry Potter I'm going to prep the asparagus for broiling. And I need to make a viniagrette for them too..
@Gilneas OH NO! We use real trash bags, not the Safeway ones - those always have holes in them!
@JoJo - It was a very last minute turkey :) We used what we had! One hour left till I see how it comes out!!
I used two of the turkey cooking bags tied twice to brine, and it worked with no leaks. Now, here's hoping it actually cooks well and tastes good - it's my first ever!
I need a second oven. :(
I like how you say 730am like that's really early, lol. =]. I've been on and off awake since 630 or so...but that happens when you go to bed at 10pm like an old lady =]
Man, your stores are open today??? That's awesome! We're pretty much screwed if we didn't buy everything yesterday!
@jojobananas - just make sure your trash bags are NOT recycled and that they're food safe!
We have brined our turkey in a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot every year prior to this, but Mr. Snow splurged on a brining bag (only b/c we couldn't stick the bucket outside this year due to unseasonably warm temps...around 35...lol)
forgive me if this is totally ridiculous, but what the heck is brining? i'm fairly certain my mom does not do it... whatever it is... lol
I slept in until 11. I feel like such a slacker. I'm jealous that people were able to get a move on. Now I'll be rushing to do all the prep!
Snow- brined turkey is amazing. Nom nom!
Mrs.DG i slept until 11 too! haha...but i am at work today :( anyone want to bring me a plate?
Not just saltwater ottowa, there are other things involved. My dude's recipe calls for all sorts of herbs and spices - bay leaves, juniper berries and some other things (I don't remember b/c he always takes care of it). He got the recipe out of the newspaper a few years ago.

. . . to keep the Dude company while he starts the smoker and puts the turkey on!
I may go to the store here in a bit to get some last minute items and ingredients for my cream cheese pumpkin pie.
Anyone else up already doing T-day chores?
