Soooo amazing! I wish I was this talented! I cannot wait for more updates :)
I love seeing the progress just keep posting updates I cant wait to see the finished product!
it's going to be beautiful! And I'm happy to meet another pink-dress bride. :)
I am so excited to see the end result! It's beautiful already!
I'm so excited to see the process of this dress! It looks so lovely so far!
@moonadea: I started a spinoff! It's not made yet but I posted the inspiration pics.
Oh that looks good, keep posting updates, I cannot wait to see more pictures and the final project or art! It's going to look beautiful.
I will definitely keep posting updates. I probably won't get much more done on it for a couple of weeks though when I go back to visit my mom again. She has the sewing machine and years of expertise. All I do is cut, iron and pin lol. But I brought everything home with me so I can get my fix. : D And start sewing beads onto appliques.
So exciting! I'm definitely going to keep following your progress!
The dress looks amazing so far, I can't wait to see the finished project!!
It looks great so far! It's so cool to see how you do each step! I'll be following the progress for sure!
Thank you everyone for your kind words. : D It is definitely a time and energy consuming process so I'm glad to have your words of encouragement.
I've been torturing myself this morning looking at pictures of expensive gowns online and wondering whether my dress will just look terrible and messy and shapeless compared to them. Gulp!
@moonadea: Looks beautiful! And you are Very courageous for sewing your own wedding dress! I am a sewer/freelance designer and all my friends (even my FI) tell me I should sew my dress! But I know how stressful the whole wedding planning phase is (we are planning an out of town wedding too) so I think it may be too much for me to design and sew a dress on top of it! I am considering making my MOH's dress though.
Good luck to you and your mom! I really love the pink and lace. You can check out Burdastyle and see some of the handmade dresses people have made for themselves. I'm sure it will be amazing and how many people can say they made their own wedding dress?? :)
@moonadea: Looks beautiful just like I knew it would dress-sewing-sister :-)
Are you making a crinoline for it too?
@csdncer2013, thanks for that burdastyle link! After poking around on there for a bit, I found a pattern with a similar looking top and since it was only $5 I bought it! I'm not sure if I'll even use it but I was curious to compare it to mine.

@lexy, I actually found a huge poofy, ugly prom dress for pennies at a thrift store. I just cut the crinoline out from it and voila! Done. Saved myself some time any money.
@moonadea: You can include darts or princess seams if you worry your dress will be shapeless. It may be be hard with the lace (take a bit of work to match the seams), but you'll notice the pattern and your corset has princess seams. Since we have curves :) they help to shape the fabric to our body. I love how you utilized the crinoline from an old prom dress! Good luck!
@csdncer2013: Yeah, we had darts in on one of the drafts, but I felt like it made the satin look bubbly so we took them out. I kept going back and forth between a standard princess seam bodice and the corset look, but for some reason it didn't occur to me to combine them! I think I might try that. Hopefully my mom won't kill me if I tell her I want to abandon our 2+ days of work and start over. : /
Here are some pictures of the dress (I'd be using the bodice only, obviously):

I also found this online "sewing class" which I'm contemplating taking to see if I can learn some things about fit.

@moonadea: Satin is difficult to sew without puckering :/ Make sure you have a rather new, Sharp type needle... It gives you a cleaner looking seam. You can also hand baste the curves before using the machine, clip the seam allowances and just try to iron out any remaining bubbles. Your draft looks great though... Making patterns isn't easy! Kudos to you and your mom! To add princess seams, you can just take your original pattern, slash it right under each bust cup and add seam allowances, then sew it back up. So it wouldn't be much different pattern than what you have! I know after all the work you've put into it, it can be discouraging to go backwards (my seam ripper is my best friend, lol)... But sometimes I think that extra step can save you a lot more work further down the line. You may find you don't need the princess seams though if your top fits you fine, so def try your draft on first. Good luck! Again, your dress is already looking amazing!
@OP, where did you get the lace fabric on the bottom? That's the kind of lace I'm looking for to make a bolero.
@maudemaisha: Not really unfortunately! Some things came up so I won't be heading back to my mom's to resume work until the first weekend of February. I'm starting to get anxious about finishing in time!
@woodwindwaker: All my materials have come from a store in Gastonia, NC called Mary Jo's. That's their only location, and it's the most amazing fabric store ever.
what an ambitious project. can't wait to see the finished result.
Another trick for working with satin is to pin/baste some tissue paper (like the kind used for pattern paper) on the under side of the seam (the side that will be against the feed dogs). This gives more traction to the feed dogs and helps prevent the slippage that can cause puckering.
When you're done you just gently and carefully tear the tissue paper away.
I used this when making a silk charmeuse dress on my ancient machine that has a tendency to be a little overzealous when it feeds fabric through.

Recap - see this thread.
Well bees, we didn't finish the bodice, but we got about 70% of the way there. Considering we were starting from scratch without even a pattern, we did pretty good I think.
First we drafted the pattern:
Then we cut everything out of muslin and experimented until we got it looking good:
Then we cut everything out of the peach silk and started assembling!
We still have to fix one of the cups (it's puckering) and then attach the lace, and obviously attach the back lining and finish the edges. Here it is with the lace laid over it as a mini preview. : )
Oh, and the ivory thing is my corset/bra I'll be wearing with it if you couldn't tell.
There are more pictures and a bit more of the story in my blog, PM me if you want to check it out.
I can't wait to keep working on it!
