We recently bought a rental house. During the inspection, it was noted that the windows in the basement bedrooms did not meet egress. So as soon as the house sale went through, we immediately ordered the necessary windows.
This was in July. We were hoping that the windows would come in before the new tenants moved in in September, but that didn’t happen. So we told the new tenants when they moved in that new windows were on their way and would be installed at some point.
The windows finally arrived, and we booked the work for today and tomorrow. We gave the tenants 7 days’ notice that the work would be happening, and asked them to move their things away from the windows.
We just got a call from the contractor that he finished installing the first window, and the tenants are unhappy. I guess he had to saw through the foundation, and although he covered their beds, computers, etc., with plastic, there is still dust EVERYWHERE. He will be going back to install the other two windows tomorrow, so that will triple the amount of dust.
I am wondering what we should do. My husband is planning to take a shop vac up there and help them clean up, but from the sounds of it, it’s gotten into their shoes, etc. That’s a big mess to deal with that wasn’t their fault, but the work HAD to be done.
We didn’t know that it would be such a huge mess, and we want to do the right thing by our tenants. I’ve called some professional cleaning companies, and have been told that they can’t do the work until the end of the week at the earliest, and would only clean surfaces, not belongings. I’m looking for suggestions about what we should do.
