Have you been to a doctor? You probably need to get an antibiotic. The only thing you can do for the pain is taking regular pain medicines like Advil.
The AZO tablets did nothing for me. I always went to the doctor immediately.
I had one about 6 months ago & went to the doc. They did give me some antibiotics but the AZO tablets did just about the same as the antibiotic did. I'll try out the advil.
OMG, I remember getting one before. It was THE WORST. I'm so sorry!! I was still in college then, my mother told me to use boric acid...? I think its a mild form of anticeptic. I was too stubborn to go out and find it, I waited until the college clinic was open and I drank cranberry juice like I was in a chugging contest. Apparently it helps. I hope the symptoms go away for you soon!
I get UTIs every few months because of a medical condition, and sorry to say, but besides the AZO tablets, nothing helps the pain for me. :( The AZO tablets take away all my symptoms though, so hopefully they do for you too! Make sure you get some antibiotics to get rid of the infection because the AZO tablets just get rid of the symptoms, not the underlying problem. With antibiotics and AZO tablets, I'm back to normal in 2 days.
Thanks @jennifer!!! Yes, they are the WORST!! I never knew about the cranberry juice, I'll try that! It stinks because it comes out of NO WHERE!
@Boston: Yeah, you're right. The antibiotics would probably give me that extra kick I need to help with the pain. I just hate going to the stupid doctor!!
OH & thanks Mr. Bee or whoever it was that changed the topic to "wellness"!! :)
I use to get them from the spermicide on condoms, but since I switched w/ a no spermicide. I do not get them anymore. About the cranberry juice, it doesn't help while you have an infection. You drink it before, and make sure you get the 27 % Real Cranberry Juice. You drink this before, like 1 to 2 glasses a day. This will help build up the walls of your bladder, and the good bacteria, which will help with not getting a UTI. When getting one, my only suggestion. Is drinking plenty of water, you just need to flush your system, and take antibotics. I used to get these all the time, and had to go to a urologist. They suck, and I feel for you guys!
Oh, and I agree about the cranberry juice. It only helps to prevent infections, not get rid of one once you have one!
There's actually a natural remedy you can use that I found when I lived in London called "D-Mannose." I order it now from a company called Waterfall D-Mannose (also known as "Sweet Cures") because it worked so amazingly. Unlike AZO, it doesn't just treat the symptoms, but actually can cure your UTI and it can work within hours!
You can try ordering caplets online (either through Sweet Cures or some other companies...there are domestic companies who sell D-mannose). Also, in a pinch, you could go to a health food store. I know Whole Foods sells D-Mannose but their brand isn't as good as some others that I've tried.
Hope that helps!
Drink Cranberry Juice but see a Dr. b/c over the counter will just ease the pain not cure it
yeap, i was going to suggest cranberry juice. That's what's in thepill too. Ouch, so sorry that you are going through that...those UTIs SUCK!!
Drink lots of Cranberry juice. The real stuff though, not the "juice" kind. It should help a lot :)
Make sure, MAKE SURE (i can't stress this enough) that you buy cranberry juice, and not that cranberry "juice" crap that's "100% juice" and the first ingredient is apple or pear juice. Usually the cocktails/blends have a lot of sugar, which isn't good for the UTI.
I find that knocking back a jar/bottle (64oz) over a day or so usually sets things straight, along with taking garlic, but these are the things you do when you can't get to a Dr.
My mom used to tell me to drink baking soda in water, and it actually helped. About half a tsp of baking soda in 8 oz glass of warm water, a few times a day. It raises the pH of urine so it doesn't burn so much.
A heating pad always helped me with the achey all-the-time pain in my abdomen.
Drinking tons of water is always good too. Hope you feel better soon!
Definitely go get antibiotics. I have had UTIs before and this is the only thing that helps. A few years ago, I had a UTI but was in the midst of studying for law school finals, so I let it slide. Eventually, the pain went away and I thought I was all healed. Wrong. The next week my FI and I went to Montreal and as we were walking around the city I started having horrific lower back pain. I thought I was sore from walking, but was confused because I am physically fit. I thought maybe I was constipated or was having gas issues. None of these assumptions were correct. After many attempts at relieving the pain (mostly humorous...and involving an enema), I could barely stand and made my way to the ER. Turns out, that little UTI worked its way up into my kidneys and I had one painful kidney infection. Don't learn the hard way, see a doctor ASAP!
@lees-with cranberry jusice, make sure you get as high of a percentage of REAL JUICE as possible - not the cocktail thats about 4% juice (Dole, Ocean Spray, etc). There is 100% natural stuff that works very well. Its very sour, but I actualy like it, and its 100% juice. the other stuff is misleading
Also to note about the Azo - I heard that stuff worked wonders, but I tried it for 2 days just a few months ago. I did have some old kidney damage (Bad damage from a cheerleading accident years ago) and it actually sent my kidney into partial failure. So please be careful with it if you have ANY kidney issues at all!
Like someone just said, DONT let it go - I had one that worked its way up into my kidneys and I was hospitalized for 5 days. I have horrible kidney issues from it now (consequently, in the same kidney I injured while cheering) and its excruciating when it flares up.
Oh gosh @Kelly that's horrible about the kidney failure! I'm sorry you went through that.
& to the rest of you ladies, thank you all so much! I'm glad I'm able to talk to yall who have experienced it before & not just my FI who doesn't have any idea! It JUST started today so hopefully it won't get too bad :( It's not unbearable right now, but I'm going to see how it is tomorrow and if it's not any better I'll definitely be going to a doctor. I'm going to Wal Mart tonight too, so I'll look for the real cranberry juice!
Thank you all so much!
I am a chronic UTI sufferer so I feel your pain. As has been said by other people, the AZO or Uristat only treats the pain and not the infection. YOU MUST GO TO THE DR!!! Like KellyV said, you can get terrible kidney infections which can be serious. No matter how many times you take the AZO it is not going to help the infection. Good luck, cause I know how completely awful they are.
Question really fast...when I went to the Gyno they gave me a perscription for Doxy-Caps, which is doxycycline I believe? I looked up the description of it & it said it treats bacteria in many areas of the body. She gave me this because I had a lot of red cells or something in that area which was causing it to be very sensitive...would this also help a UTI to clear out?
I take a prescription all the time now because I catch these all the time (something is wrong with my bladder). When I've been out and just wanted to "flush it" Lots and lots of cranberry juice. You'll be in the bathroom every ten minutes, but after a couple of hours, it flushes it out.
Lees, at walmart, they might carry the good juice, but the ones around here have stopped.
It doesn't look like Ocean Spray sells theirs anymore. The other brand is Northland, they were selling an all-cranberry juice.
Now I buy this stuff, it runs about $8 a bottle.
Thanks @IA Snowflake: You know, a lot of times I'll find when I have sex I'll feel like I'll have to pee. TMI, I know...but I also posted on here something about me not being able to have an O either. Maybe these two tie in together? I often feel like I have the pressure of using the bathroom when having sex! & I know this is probably what's caused it too. :(
Lees, just because you feel pressure and feel like you have to pee when you have sex doesn't mean that is causing urinary track infections. I always get up and go to the bathroom right after sex to get rid of any bacteria that could cause an infection. And it is completely normal, I feel like that too and I can still orgasm.
@MissAsB: Thanks girl. Glad that's not causing it. I try to make a point to use the bathroom right after, too...I'll just have to make sure to be EXTRA careful!
The reason that it happens is because it's kind of close quarters in there so when you are having sex, your bladder is often hit causing you to feel like you have to pee!
Lees- please don't use old antibiotics to treat this UTI. When you go to the MD, they'll either culture or put you on an antibiotic that covers most common UTIs... Doxy is not our drug of choice for that!
Don't cut corners, this is your health!
Some MDs will even give you the script over the phone if you call and have been seen for UTI before. Don't delay!
@Mrs. DG - Thank you! I haven't gotten these antibiotics filled yet, though. I did a google search and it does say that that drug is commonly used to cover UTI's, but you're right...it is my health & I def. don't want to cut any corners. I just tried calling the clinic that treated me for it a couple of months ago...I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be able to write me a perscription!! Thank you for the advice!
I'm glad you are calling Lees! Doxy is definitely not one of my first line therapies for UTI, but can be effective as well... It really depends on the cause of the infection... Which is why I always encourage contact with the health care provider.
"The drugs most often used to treat routine, uncomplicated UTIs are trimethoprim (Trimpex), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrim), amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Wymox), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin), and ampicillin (Omnipen, Polycillin, Principen, Totacillin). A class of drugs called quinolones includes four drugs approved in recent years for treating UTI. These drugs include ofloxacin (Floxin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), and trovafloxin (Trovan)."
Lees, don't forget that antibiotics make birth control pills less effective. I know someone who got pregnant when she was taking antibiotics.
Thanks Mrs. DG!
& MissAsB: Yeah, I forget about that a lot. Thank you for the reminder..I'll be sure to use extra backup! Although, I don't think I'll be having sex anytime soon!
Just got a call back from the clinic, they're going to re-fill it for me this time but next time if this happens I'll have to go in & they'll have to do further research bc this is the 2nd time within 6 months!
But thank you ladies for all of your help!! It's getting worse throughout the day so I am SO happy I'm getting perscriptions.
That's good they are refilling it. I agree that you should get checked out if it keeps happening since there could be an underlying cause for the infections.
100% Cranberry Juice. Buy two drink 1 a day and it should help. I used to get these all the time in college, to the point where I could feel one coming on. Drink 100% cranberry (NOT cocktail--the sugar in it will make it worse) a big container for two days and you should feel better.
Most def go to the doctor, but in the meantime drink cranberry juice! I had a really bad one last summer when I was working my internship at Disney World...the Florida sun requires a lot of water, and the schedule doesn't allow for a lot of potty breaks!! I didn't have a chance to go to the doctor, so I sat down with a HU-U-UGE bottle of 100% cranberry juice and drank the whole thing over the span of three hours! I had to pee like a frickin' racehorse, but it helped a ton.
I hope you feel better soon! UTIs are no fun. :(
That's funny (ok, not funny, but interesting) that I noticed this post getting le bumped, because I have another bladder infection. Uggghghghg. I know I need to go to the doctor. I have a fever and some other not-so-awesome side-effects. And I was just getting over my pneumonia stuff too. I have such bum luck in the health department. :p
I get UTI's about twice a year because I'm bad about going to the bathroom. (I tend to hold it too long because I'm busy at work or climbinb, what have you). I've taken to drinking a cup of pure organic cranberry juice every morning and trying to listen to my body. But when it does happen, I try to lessen the pain with advil and focusing my attention on something else...not always possible, but I try.
A long time ago mine would be so bad that I would have to take a very low dose antibiotic every time after I had sex. If you keep on having re-occuring UTI's I would talk to your doctor about this.
***Warning about Cranberry Juice****
Allthough it does help with the pain it does not cure the infection. Drink 100% cranberry juice along with antibiotics. If you feel like you have a UTI and you just drink cranberry juice and you feel better the infection may spread to your kidneys. Which is super bad.

Ohhhhh my gosh, I already know what causes these & I've had them about 3 times now. It's the worst feeling in the WORLD & I know about the AZO Tablets too. Once someone gets back here @ work and I'm not the only one here I'm definitely going to buy some of those.
BUT - besides those tablets, what else can I get to help with the pain?!?!?!
