I’m Canadian and have been waiting a month for a package to arrive. It shipped on September 18th and the tracking says it is still in a town in NY as of Sept 29 with no further movement. It always says it has cleared customs once a package has made it over the border.
Do you think they lost my package or is USPS federal? Will the shutdown affect postal service?

It shouldn’t no, we are still getting mail here in the US

It’s not affecting domestic mail. But since your package is international mail, there may be an issue of fewer customs staff to process it.

USPS is not affected. They have a message at the top of their website saying they are still open, and I just got back from the post office this morning.
ETA: PP is probably right in that it’s being held up with customs, which may be affected by the shutdown.

I’d call and ask about it if you have a tracking #. I don’t think customs are affected either.

The USPS is still operating. But on the border they may have reduced some staff in customs (I’m not sure) that could be putting a delay on the processing of your package.
I’d definitely call if you can.

Nope, USPS is working as normal

Thanks for all the replies.
I have called and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a hold of someone. So infuriating. I filed an inquiry and got the most annoying, generic email telling me to call the #! UGH. so I’m just really frustrated.
Perhaps you’re all right, it must be a customs issue. It just is bizarre to me because usually it will say that the package has reached the border, at least. I’m gonna be SO SAD if you lost my package : (

I had a package delivered FROM Canada (via USPS) last week. I live in the US. My package came exactly on time..you might want to give USPS a call or check the tracking number online!

@nber0815: hmm that’s what i was afraid of. i have called numerous times & emailed… the tracking online just says it is still in NY. as of sept 29. they lost it, i bet 🙁

I’m waiting for a package too, that was shipped the day after the government shut down. I’m also going to assume it’s held up at the border, but I’m not sure if US customs actively checks outgoing mail. I know for sure that Canadian customs checks all packages – they X ray everything.
I’m kind of mad though… the parcel is just a bunch of music books my cousin in Chicago sent to me. They were supposed to come within a week because she sent them express airmail. Oh well.

@mu_t: The post office is on a yearly contract with the govenment. They get their money to run in lump sums every year. Untill their fiscal year runs out, and the govenment can’t pay them their next lump sum, they should be operating normally.
