@Creiddylad:  Do you have a CarMax by you? I swear by them! My mom and I both got our used cars through them and we love them. I’ve had my car for 4 years now and havent had a single “major” repair done. I got a fair price, too, and there was no hassling or pressure to buy. I strongly recommend!

@Creiddylad:  I just went through that about a month ago, although my list of must haves were a bit harder to meet.

I just had my 1997 camry (with 181k miles) die on me, so I wanted something max 5 years old, with less than 15k miles, for $13k or under, and preferably no accidents/single owner/not a rental car. I learned quickly this doesn’t exist! I ended up just buying brand new for ~$16500 because I didn’t want to have to deal with repairs like my camry. I was getting that thing fixed once a month it seemed.

So, no advice, but maybe rethink your car loan refusal!

@Creiddylad:  It’s totally doable but will take some digging to get a cheap car within your budget.  My little sister got her 2002 Accord coupe for $6k with 80k miles on it.  It was a hunter green, though.  I’m sure you’ll find something!  Good luck!

Oh girlllll I can sooo relate.  My DH totaled his car last week and we have been on the hunt!  It is just a nightmare.  We want something a little bigger b/c we have baby #1 on the way and we want low-ish miles, but we will finance and are looking for something less than $15k.  And we have come up empty handed.  I am just shocked that we can’t find anything and even more shocked that most dealerships don’t seem willing to negotiate a price at all.. We’ve been told the listed price is it….. which is bizarre!  We were even told by one salesman that the car we were looking at had been marked down 3 times and the next stop would be to the auction! I was like wouldn’t you rather sell it to us then have to auction it off??? Nope, guess not b/c they didn’t even budge $1 on the price.  We got so frustrated that we even looked at new cars.. we “thought” we were on the right track until the salesguy emailed saying he had messed up the numbers so BAM right back to where we were before.

Sorry I dont’ have any advice.. just commiserating 🙁  Good luck, I hope you find your car soon!!

We love Carmax, too.  They can also bring cars in from other locations for you.  We don’t buy or sell anywhere else anymore.

It took me forever to find my Subaru. I did have to get a loan (on top of my student loans), but I was a little pickier than you’re being. Where are you looking? AutoTrader, Craigslist, the newspaper? Check grocery store posting boards and lots of stores have a local car listing magazine thing right by the doors that’s free.
