I don’t have kids yet but, Sophie is BY FAR the most popular baby toy on the market. It’s like baby crack-rubber. My sis in law even gave us (or baby) one for christmas arleady because she wanted to be the one to buy her.

It’s not very exciting, but I’ve often heard from new mothers and experienced mothers at baby showers that you can never have too many face cloths. You could always include a cute pack of 5-10 with another gift as well.

@annb9:  I second Sophie! My neice loves the thing! 😀 It is about 25 bucks, but I think it’s worth it! I’m so glad I bought it for her!

Also, think practical! Burp cloths, nail clipper/files for baby, socks, diapers, towels/wash cloths, changing pad cover, baby brush/comb etc…

When all else fails, look towards her registry! Moms are specific about the diapers they want, the bottles, the diaper rash cream, the baby lotion.

For example, a lot of people gave my sister johnson and johnson stuff when she really wanted burts bees! Turns out my neice doesn’t have sensitive skin, but still!

Also, if she’s breastfeeding there are nipple creams, breast pads, nursing shirts.

And then there are the really cute and not so practical things like:

Where you can buy onesies up to 12 months and iron on monthly stickers or buy the whole kit so she can take a monthly picture of the progress!

You can also think of soft toys like soft block rattles, sophia, the turtle that puts lights on the ceiling, baby books, sound machine.

If you want to think of the mom a little bit more you could hire a photographer to do a photo session that’s paid for, buy her a pedicure and manicure (make sure it doesn’t expire)…

I really could go on and on. New moms need everything! 😀

If you want to get her something useful, get a baby medical kit- a thermometer, a nasal aspirator, baby scissors etc.

A coworker told me one of the best gifts he got was the giant bottle of baby soap/shampoo I got him.  “We didn’t even think about buying it, but we had it, we used it all the time, and we didn’t even have to buy it again for like a year, it was great.”

Everyone forgets to buy baby sunscreen until they want to go out on a sunny day, you can do a bathtime basket with a sweet hooded towel, baby shampoo, lotion and a rubber ducky… just pick a theme and go with it.

@MsJ2theZ:  Sophie was fun at first but after months of squeaking I wanted to kill her. :/

I lived for the Fisher Price musical seahorse glow worm thing. We played it every time it was time to go to sleep. Eventually it made her fall asleep when she heard it. Also the SaraBear diaper basket has been useful for the whole two years we have had it. We never changed the baby on the diaper changer.
