One of my parents said something to me about the united states postal service is not going to be delivering mail on Saturdays anymore. I was like...what?!?

Is that true and does it mean that the post office itself also won't be open on Saturdays anymore?

Who has the scoop? Fill me in.

Here is an article I found about it: http://www.suntimes.com/business/2130278,CST-NWS-post30.article

They have not cancelled mail delivery on Saturday yet, they are just talking about it.

Here is the proposal by the Postal Service to have a 5 day delivery schedule: http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2010/pr10_031.pdf#search=%275%20day%20delivery%27

It looks like it has to be approved by Congress.

Meh... I think the post office kind of sucks. Encouraging people to do more things online might be a good thing :)

I'm prob in the minority but I would LOVE if e-vites became the in thing to do!

    LOL.

It would not affect us at all if they delivered one day less.

haha i guess i was thinking forward to the eventual demise of the entire system :) I'm very pro-kramer on this issue (not to be confused with pro-keith richards)

That would piss me off because I have a 9-5 M-F job with an ugly commute and I can only really go to the Post Office on Saturdays. But I mean, why cater to people with jobs?

Yep they are just talking about it. I think they will still deliver packages and maybe even to PO Boxes for businesses.  I think the Saturday mail to the houses could be a good thing.  Prior to the wedding I checked the mail every other day because it was mostly junk mail.  Now I check it daily for wedding stuff.

@msmonicka: It happened about a month ago!

I agree with Kitty that it would be a pain to get to the post office once I have a job.  I really don't have to go much right now except when I sell things online but I'd rather not have to rush there after work.

Haha Monicka.  We did too the first week or so after we sent invites out.  I could not wait to get home!  And then we got none for weeks...very anticlimatic and the excitement of getting them dwindled to zero.

I have heard this too. They haven't put it into effect yet, but they have been trying to stop Saturday mail delivery for a very long time.

@ CorgiTales: I just recently had to explain to my dear sweet FI why it would be NOT okay to send people evites. He was really pushing for it as he saw me cutting and pasting my pocketfolds.

Of course it may not have been that he wanted to save me the trouble - he might have just wanted the mess off of our dining room table. :)

Just wanted to chime in that post offices would still be open on Saturdays.  They are just proposing to not deliver mail on Satuday.  So you could handle business at the post office on Saturday.  Again, this is all pending Congress' approval.

Oh well that's good that they will be open on Saturday!  I do think that I don't really get much mail right now.  Maybe one thing a day but it's usually junk.  We get a lot of our bills online because I don't want to waste paper on them.

I don't get what the big deal is...they are just talking about not delivering residential mail on Saturdays.  There are LOTS of gov. offices that aren't open Saturdays (like the DMV?) but the Post Office will still be open, they just won't deliver mail.  I don't see it having any serious effects on either my personal life or the economy.  Honestly for me it will be one less day of receiving countless credit card offers!  As it is they already have 24 hour mailing stations at the Post Office, so I never have a problem mailing anything I need to.

That APC at the Post Office was my husband's project for the past ten years.  USPS will eventually stop Saturday delivery-  to save money.  Having an insider view of their situation, I know they have not managed their resources well for many years... and contrary to public belief, USPS is supposed to run independently from the government's monetary input.

I don't really care about mail delivery on a Saturday, but lately I have been so annoyed with the post offices being closed on Saturday. The ones in my area even say they are open on Saturday, it is even printed on the building, but they definitely are not. The last few times I've tried to go it is dark and closed tighter than fort knox.

We have stories from my husband's contacts, that people have been breaking into machines in the lobby to steal stamps because they have currency value.  Unfortunate- it's become a different world.

Wow so much good chit chat!!

CONGRATS ASB...I WANNA BE A FRIGGIN HOSTESS!! PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR ME ;-)

Anywho, yea if they don't deliver mail on Sat, it probably won't faze me much but I"m glad they would keep post offices open tho. Those machines are the best!! However, they only let you mail packages of a certain size. So if you have a bigger package, you have to go in and stand in line and I don't know about anywhere else but the lines at the post offices here in MKE suck @*# everytime I go in there. They're like out the door.

My mail lady seems to only deliver on days that she feels like it so we prob wont notice. We always get sale flyers late, things that are supposed to come on certin days come a day late, we dont get any mail on trash day!

Just think it will be much more eco friendly taking all thoes cars off the road!

??  I thought the Post Office stopped accepting stamps in exchange for cash??  I actually saw someone try to "sell back" a roll of stamps last week and the teller turned them down.  New policy maybe?
