Gah, my DH is equally difficult to buy for! I can't offer any good suggestions (Books? DVDs? A romantic getaway?), but I can commiserate. Like you, Christmas (and his December bday!) tapped me out!
I am the luckiest person in the world when it comes to this... FI's bday, valentine's day and our dating anniversary are all within 7 days. I end up buying him a gift for his birthday (usually something he didn't get for Christmas) and then to celebrate valentines day and our anniversary we go out somewhere fancy and special.
This year I am getting him a tool and we are going to a really nice dinner theatre/murder mystery and staying in a hotel.
My DOC had a great idea too! Her DH and V-day are close as well, so she bought him a trip to somewhere hot (cuba or dominican or something?)... and of course she had to go along too! ;)
I think I'm going to get him a leather laptop bag. I found one on etsy but it got sold before I could get it.
Edit, and I picked our wedding date, because my birthday is March, his is Sept, Christmas comes halfway one way, wedding is halfway the other!
Haha, maybe we should start a petition for moving Vday a couple of months later, so we have more time to come up with things/save money!
Fi's birthday is in november, then came Christmas, now this.. I think I'll be going the DIY route with cookies and a jars of reasons why I love him and a nice card and whatever else I can think of.. besically a lot of little things that aren't too hard on my wallet.
I'm getting him a nice trimmer set. My FI doesn't currently have one, so this is something that he will use. I'll get him a nice card too, so I can write something sweet in it.
@parasol: I'm leaning towards the romantic getaway. We've been talking about going away for a few days but if I leave it up to him to pick when, it will never happen. This way if it's already booked, we're going. Now I just need to decide where! Thanks for the suggestion. :)
@UpstateCait: Honestly, that sounds like the most amazing option! And if he's unlikely to buckle down and plan something like this himself, then I think it's perfect! Definitely let us know where you plan on going. :)
A coffee grinder. It arrived from Amazon a few days ago. And I imagine some fancy coffee beans to go with it.
Ask my SO the same question. He will have NO idea. My birthday and V-Day are the SAME week. And so he always panics that week as he has no idea what to get me. My mind boggles that he doesn't go Christmas sale shopping and pick up a load of stuff I'll love - I even remind him every single year that it'd help him out if he did this. But no. Roll on February and he will be very stressed out again. He is not great at presents.
ETA: I did the getaway for his birthday - it was awesome!
@CanadianMermaid: Sounds as good as any gift really! FI Would probably like that more than a bag TBH
@CanadianMermaid: Aaaahahah. We aren't big on presents. We'll probably go to a nice dinner together, but that's it.
I really like the idea of creative gifts for V Day. (And maybe corny too.) Last year I cut out red construction paper hearts and wrote little love notes. On one note I wrote "You are the Almond Joy of my life." and put the candybar with it. I know sooooooo corny. He loved it! The red hearts are STILL sitting on his nighstand now! I've hinted over the last year that he could get rid of them but he won't do it. I'm thinking home made coupons this year.
I always get my SO a sexy pair of underwear for Valentines day (and Christmas, and birthdays...), so this year I ordered a pair of glow in the dark briefs off of Etsy. Also from Etsy I got him a usb drive made out of a Hot Wheels Mustang :D
@CanadianMermaid: love it! That's pretty much my budget too lol
My birthday is 6 days before Valentines so we usually go away for the week-end to celebrate both together, usually we go to the falls and over here we now have a Family day holiday which is usually the week-end following valentine's day, so that's when we go away.
Im not sure. I really hope we decide to just go out for dinner and not buy any gifts for each other! We go all out for xmas and bdays but valentines day isnt a huge deal for me.
DH is getting a couple Disney Blu-Ray DVDs... he really wants to collect all the classics as they come out on Blu-Ray so we have a complete set when we have kids. And I'll probably bake something special... some sort of cheesecake or something.
But in all honesty, @CanadianMermaid probably has the best idea!
Hands down CanadianMermaid style. Our sky high property taxes are due the following month and we are poor newlyweds ;)
My mister is nearly impossible for me to shop for, plus our anniversary is a month after V-day and then a month after that is his birthday. Sigh. Thankfully he suggested we make each other Valentine's cards this year so that makes it a whole lot easier for me.
Ahhh this is a good post! I'm thinking that he's going to pop the question on V-day so i'm like what the heck can compare to that?!?! Plus, I just started a new job so money is tight for me (we don't share finances). All of his hobbies consist of big ticket items so I can't go that route. Hopefully bees will post some more good DIY ideas!
See, my Danny is super EASY to buy for, the problem is, with the hospital bills mounting from my poor health lately and us putting away for the wedding, I'm scared we won't be able to afford gifts. :( we are definitely having a date night, though! Where we dress up and go out to eat, go to a movie, make each other old school construction paper valentines, and bake a cake. (we love to bake together) Honestly, memories are far more precious than material possessions anyway.
Definitely a Wii game, but I'm still trying to figure out which one he'll like the most.
I'm just going to paint him a card. Our sixth anniversary is just under a month later, so valentine's day isn't big.
he "lost" his iPod at work (he forgot it and someone probably took it off his desk and kept it) so I may pick up one of those for him...order it online and get it engraved with something cute we had a small christmas this year too due to moving and being so busy (I told him next year we need to have stockings and surprises because christmas morning was just like any other day)
But his birthday is also in March....so I will have to think of something good for that
I have been so busy being a newlywed and trying to get settled into our new home that I forgot Valentine's Day is coming up! I don't know whether we will exchange presents per se, but we will definitely go out to somewhere special for dinner, and there will be champagne at home. I hope he will get me flowers since I haven't had them in a while. I think I might make him some chocolate fondue. We saw that done on a cooking show last week and I think it would be fun for a romantic evening in.
I'll probably get him a card and we'll probably go out for a nice dinner. Maybe Melting Pot because it's fun.
The annivesary of our engagement is February 12th so we're going to be celebrating that instead of Valentines day, which I'm happy about.. not too crazy about v-day. I'm probably just going to get him something sentimental, and maybe a nice coat. His birthday is the next month and I'll be getting him a new dslr camera :)
@takemyhand: between November and February we have our Anniversary, Christmas, Hanukkah, my birthday, his birthday and valentines day. We usually do one gift for the holidays and then something small for our birthdays and just cook dinner on v-day.
This year we're leaving for our honeymoon the day after v-day, so... sleep!
We're on a very tight budget since we're paying for a spring break trip...but I've decided to make him one of those "52 reasons Why I Love You" playing card flip books. He's also decided to make me something...but isn't the craftiest boy on the planet, so I'm interested to see what he comes up with. We'll see!!
We usually just go out to a dinner or a nice brunch and exchange cards. This year, I'm making a card that will have scratch off lottery tickets clipped on the front. I'm still thinking about the wording, but probably something like "There's more than one way to get lucky tonight."
We don't usually do the V-day gift thing since my birthday if a week later and i refuse to have him spend money on two gifits! We aren't consistent with v-day some years we do and some we don't! And last year we didn't really do anything because I took my boards so we celebrating the fact that THAT was over! lol....ok I am rambling! So he always gets me big gifts for Christmas, etc. and I never have a lot of money, but now I have a big girl job! I am surprising him with an ipod! We already decided we are staying in, eating chinese, and watching a movie! So I am really excited to surprise him..I know he really wants one, but can't afford it at the moment.

He's the hardest person to buy for. I pulled out all the stops on his Xmas gifts and now I have no ideas for Valentines Day (or his bday which is in March). What are you getting your SO's for vday? I could use some ideas.
