Soooo, we need a vacuum, stat, and we have to make a decision on which one to buy. We have done a ton of research online, but I want to hear it from the hive. What kind do you have? Do you like it? Pros? Cons?

We are thinking either the Dyson Animal (but yikes, the price!) or the hoover platinum. Is bagged or bagless better?

    Weigh in!

Dyson! If you can afford it, get it. The amount of money we have spent on other (crappier) vacuums easily surpasses the price of one Dyson that will last much longer!

3 Dyson votes so far. . .the clear frontrunner.

    Anyone else have a recommendation?

    Dyson!  Totally worth it.

If you can wait at all, sometimes you can get really good sales or open box discounts around Xmas.  That's how I got mine for about 1/2 price.

Dyson is the ONLY brand of vacuum we will buy now! I would recommend either "the animal" or "the ball"- both are great.

I did my research and heard so many amazing things about the dyson, so I saved up and went to buy one. I didn't realize until I saw it in person just how big and heavy it is. I'm very tiny, only 5'1" and just over 100 lbs, so after trying it out in the store for an hour I realized it just wasn't going to work, especially going up and down my stairs. I ended up with an Oreck, I've had it for a year and it's been great so far. They aren't very cool looking, but they're super light and do a great job on any surface.

Thought I'd mix it up a little!

My mom and my cleaning lady swear by their Sears Kenmore Progressive canister vacs. My cleaning lady hates my Eureka and brings here own vac. I'm about ready to ditch the Eureka, it seems to be doing a bad job lately and I've changes the bag and belt. Also various plastic pieces for the atachments are breaking.  My mom never liked her Oreck, but my AUnt loves hers.

We're still hoping to get a Dyson, but our Electrolux broke (after like 15 years, I can't complain too much!) and we had to buy something that wouldn't break the bank.  I read all the reviews and test results on Consumer Reports and we wound up with a Hoover bagless upright with the cord rewind system, and it works great so far.  We got it at Sears, so if anything at all breaks over the next 2 years, they will replace the vacuum or completely fix it, for free, as many times as needed.  For $120 (including the vacuum price) that seemed like a pretty good deal.

It doesn't get under the coffee table easily, and I think any upright would have a tough time with that...so my new experience taught me to get a canister vac next time, but DEFINITELY sticking with the bagless!  The rinsable filter (meaning no pricey filter replacements) is fab, too.

We don't have dogs but we do have a bunny; he sheds quite a bit for his 3-pound size!

We have the Dyson Animal, and it is awesome!  We have two big mutts, and I during shedding season (like right now) I have to vaccum every day.  My floors always look super clean, though, and I'm always amazed at how much dog hair/dirt/etc... the Dyson picks up!

I have the dyson animal and I am in love! I love how easy it is to get around. It picks up wonderfully. Using the hose is so easy. The only thing that I am not 100% in love with is that the on/off switch isn't on the handel or by the foot. I liked how my last vacume had it by the foot and my one before that had it on the handel. Both were very handy. But that is a VERY small negative. It works so so so well. I can't rave about it enought.

@LemonLavender: I was wondering if there was any way to get one on a discount, thanks for the tip! We were looking at getting ours at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but of course their amazing coupons that they always offer exclude dyson products.

@moderndaisy: see, that's what I was worried about too, I'm 5'3" and less than 100lbs, so even a little vacuum can wear me out, but I don't want to sacrifice power for size.

@BunnyBrideToBe:the hoover platinum that we were looking at comes with a separate canister vacuum, which i thought was a really cool feature, so if you are doing stairs, or blinds, it's small and easy to hold.

@Mrs. Spring: I've heard so many good things about the dyson animal. I guess I just need to give it a test run at the store to make sure it's light enough for me to push around! We have two cats so picking up animal hair is super high on the priority list.

@ktisthatbees:  I'm petite, too, so I totally get the weight issue; it's light enough (maybe 20 lbs? but easy to push/manuever) that it doesn't wear me out, even vaccuming the whole house every day.  :)  Definitely try it out; that'll make your mind up for you!

Dyson!  FI has one, thank goodness.  I sold vacuums and if I remember right Dysons were actually on the lighter end of the scale (~18 pounds for the animal, but I'm sure you can look that up) and they were rarely returned or had any issues.

We're happy with our Hoover, but we're in an apartment, so we don't have that much square footage to cover, so we didn't see a reason to go high-end.

I wanted a Dyson but can't afford the price right now. Right now I have a Eureka, but it's stopped picking up really well.

We got the Dyson Animal w/ gift card money at BBB and used the 20% discount (yahoo!).

I'd never had a bagless before and thought I'd be grossed out by all the dirt.  On the Dyson, to throw out the dirt is really easy - it does still create a little bit of a dust cloud (so I always do it outside) but it's SUPER easy (and kinda fun to see all the crud in there!)

So just "bit' it and bought the expensive Dyson, but it is WORTH every penny you wont regret it. I have had it for I dont know, close to 2 years now.  A friend actually took in my old one and got it repaired, woreked for a month, now she bought a Dyson too!

Just for instance, my $200 "pet vac" of a different brand I compared with my Dyson when i got the Dyson. I vacummed my living room with the vac I had, like a good loooong, slow, clean job and really doing it good, then i went over it with the dyson like a normal week vacume job and OMG the stuff it picked up that had been left by my old vac. YUP, not a single bit of buyers remorse after seeing that. Proved RIGHT AWAY, because omg I cant beleive how much it picked up after i did a "good" vacume job with the old one.

I love the Dyson. I didn't undertand the obsession with Dyson vacumn until I bought one. I thought all vacumn are the same, some a little stronger than other, boy was I wrong. Once we replaced the old vacumn with the Dyson, we realized how much dirt the old vacumm missed. Eek!

Dyson!! We have the DC-28 Animal- I HATE vacuuming, but even I can stand it with this one. We have 5 pets and it is amazing! SO was super impressed with how much it picked up and you could seriously just see a big difference just the first time we used it.

Like cutxkitty said, you dont get it until you try it and see for yourself. Especially if you have multiple animals, like twentyeleven said...oh yeah, HUGE dif especailly when you have a few furbabies and have the constant battle of the fur.

I have 4 cats and 3 dogs, plus we foster a couple dogs for a local rescue we are involved with. I cant imagine life with out my Dyson!
