@mrsb2011:  Can you get a referral to a pelvic floor physiotherapist?  I have no specific diagnosis, and very tolerable pain, but my GP was still willing to give me a referral.  I didn’t actually go, so I can’t comment about that side of it, I’ve got more serious health issues I want to deal with first.

Not sure if this will be of any help to you, but I googled for sexual specialists in Ottawa and came up with this list of specialists and reigons.

If one is in your area I would absolutely make an appointment to talk about your options so you can select the best treatment for you. They’ll be able to guide you on what works for most women and what doesn’t.

@Hyperventilate:  Can you just make an appointment without a referral?

@AB Bride:  I don’t know how it is in Canada, but at least for me on my health care plan I can book appointments with select providers without needing a GP’s referral. Most stuff I need a referral for, but there are a few that I don’t need to go through my regular doctor for.

At the very least they might be able to counsel her and at least point her in the right direction if her general practioner doesn’t seem interested/doesn’t know/can’t help her.

@Hyperventilate:  I thought you might know since you recommended she just make an appointment.  Most specialists require a referral here.  PTs don’t, so I just wanted to know for future reference if I do decide to seek treatment once the more life-threatening stuff is dealt with.

@AB Bride:  I have no idea, sorry. At the very least they might just be able to talk to you for the cost of a visit (Does Canada even have Co-pays? I don’t know. Here in the US we have co-pays on most plans.) Even if it’s just a discussion it might open doors on how to further treatment on your own without a specialized doctor.

@Hyperventilate:  I don’t know if it’s free, and OHIP (ON) and AHCIP (AB) do have differences.  Typical physiotherapy isn’t covered by the province.  Copay isn’t a term commonly used, but I think we do have the same thing, depending on private insurance.

I would research sex therapists – I know part of the treatment for vaginismus is psychological, and part of it is physical (using dialators in your vagina to get gradually work your way up to penetration). They would be knowledgable about the condition, and could at least point you in the right direction.

@mrsb2011:  I went through pelvic floor physical therapy for almost a year, and in January will make an appointment to try to get back into it. In addition to seeing a physical therapist, I also had dialators for use at home. I would highly encourage at least trying to see a PT once. I didn’t need botox, but they did use a TENS unit on me in the office.

Hey, i deal with this condition too. I bought the kit, i tried the numbing cream from the doctor. I will say that while i didn’t use the kit you are talking about much, I used Ideas from it. The pelvic floor ideas were the most helpful for me. I wouldn’t say I am pain free but it isn’t so bad anymore. just keep reading and doing what you can. If you can afford a therapist, go. If you need someone to talk to you can always send me a message. Hope you get things figured out.

@mrsb2011:  I was diagnosed with vaginismus and I overcame it , I couldnt even stick a finger inside and now i have sex 4 times a week, if you have an questions let me know. I used the dilators and sideways position worked best for me for intercourse..I did not use a therapist or anything else but the dilator kit
