I have seen some great posts similar to this and wanted to hear some insight on my own situation.
For my May 1 wedding, I am planning to let my 5 bridesmaids choose their own dresses to go for the mismatched look. I’ve seen it look fabulous and it makes it easier because none of them live anywhere near each other or me right now.
However, I do want to avoid some disaster that just makes it look like we threw our dresses together last minute or like one girl’s dress randomly doesn’t match the rest. How can I accomplish that? What makes it look better and what makes it go wrong?

I think it tends to look better when you keep them to a similar length and fabric. Also If you telling them to all get the same color you might want to make sure they are the same shade. I’ve seen mismatched grays where 3 out of 5 when light gray and then 2 went something closer to a blue-gray and that kind of threw everything off. I think the big one though is fabric and style–it needs to look like everyone is going to the same party!

As long as they’re the same colour/shade, and roughly the same length, I think it’s fine. As far as I’m concerned, the material doesn’t matter too much – some people look good in different materials, some don’t, and the main reason for letting them choose their own dress is to make sure they look/feel good in their dress!
If you don’t want to stress about the shades/colours not matching, perhaps you could try getting them all in different colours of the rainbow? I’ve seen a few photos of it done really well, and I’m wishing I had enough bridesmaids to make it look really good. That way the dresses don’t have to match at all (and they can all pick completely different colours and styles), and when they’re all standing together, it looks amazing! The only issue may be if, when they’re standing away from the bridal party, it’s harder to know they’re a bridesmaid, but I’m sure that’s a small price to pay.
Here’s one example – completely different styles and colours, but I still think it looks great!

@LadyElva: Wow I think that looks hideous. Honestly not to be rude but no way. Completely different styles.

@Blush.Champagne: What?? People have different tastes to me?? Not possible!

Haha! I’m sorry, I honestly didn’t mean to be rude. It was okay until I saw the girl in the light blue, it looks like she missed the mark. The other dresses go together.

@Blush.Champagne: Apology accepted. Just don’t let it happen again!
I agree though that it looks alright up until you get to the light blue dress, then the look kinda falls apart a bit. Still…RAINBOWS!!
