I'm asking this NOT to stir up drama, but to help the MODS & other bees & vendor bees as well.

If you have anything you'd like to share regarding self-promotion & vendors, please do.

I'll start... IMO, self-promotion is "my business is XYZ" or "check out my website at 123.com". I understand we don't want a million vendors saying "pick me" or things like "all non-pros will do a horrible job"... but I think we should be allowed to say why bees should chose a professional if they ask or there's a topic discussing this. If I had a question about making a dress, which I have no experience with, I'd like help from people who have experience, but a pro will be able to give me much more info because its their life & livelihood.

Example #1. If a bee asked "What do you think about this VENDOR?". So if all the non-pro bees say "they are just SO great" & a pro sees a potential huge issue (not being nit-picky, but an issue), would we actually tell them that "I see issues with this here & here..."?. Well, we'd likely offend someone & get flagged & then into trouble. In the photography realm, all the threads where I think the photos aren't very good, I just don't post on EVEN if the bee wants to know if they're good. My opinion may save her a horrible experience or show issues that would be disastrous that could be easily resolved... but I'm too afraid to get banned. So I say nothing & hope the poor bride doesn't stay with them.

Example #2. "I can't afford a pro, I want a cheap non legit, non-pro VENDOR" (which not all are bad, some are good, few are great, most just don't come close to pro standards & you do get what you pay for)... wouldn't you want to warn the OP about potential issues? I knew one bride who hired 2 different non-pros & they both backed out on her like 3 weeks before her wedding in PRIME wedding season. She tried meeting with other non-pros & she drove 1 hour round-trip to meet them & they didn't even show up. I felt so very bad for her.

I don't want to make a huge thread so I'll stop here. Just curious what other vendors think about this. & I REALLY hope this thread helps if the policy needs to change. I hope I'm not overstepping a line here!!

well since your poll allowed for non-vendors to vote, i voted that i think it needs to CHANGE!  Until this BeeM bannning incident, i didn't realize that so many of you hold back (i guess we just notice the ones that don't hold back!).  I always appreciate and WANT honest advice and since i am at the photo album stage post-wedding, i have been on the photo boards ALOT lately.  I have become practically dependent on the advice of the pros around here!

If there were no pro photogs around here, i would have to seek them on other forums i guess.

I don't know about the BeeM banning incident but I see people (pros and non-pros alike) making comments similar to those things in your examples (potential photo issues with a considered vendor, advice on the different expectation with a pro vs non-pro) with decent frequency and they don't get banned.

From what I've personally seen, I don't have any issue with the current policy.
