I think a lot of places offer that, but you probably have to specifically tell them you need X amount of meals for your vendors, and see if they can provide something at a lower cost. At the very least, they should be able to get the same meal, but not all of the courses such as appetizers, etc. and of course not be charged for the open bar per person price.
Yep, that's true. They're called vendor meals. For example, they'll usually offer a boxed lunch type thing: a sandwich, chips and a soft drink. Some venues will also offer the meal you're serving to your guests at a discounted rate. Our venue offered this to us, and gave us half off the entree for vendors, but we went with the sandwich at the request of our photographer, actually. We gave her a choice, and she preferred the sandwich because she said she likes to eat fast and get back to shooting. So we got all our vendors (photog, photog assistant, wedding coordinator) the sandwich meal. your DJ would also be included as well if you plan on having one.
EDIT: We paid $20 for our sandwich vendor meals.
yes...well you have to feed your photographer, dj, and videographer if you have one, and whoever else u may have. places charge differently...my vendors are half the normal plate cost, ive heard of some places just charging like $20 or $40 each or something. they get the same food as everyone else at mine...some places give them different food, maybe thats why they charge less.
We have the same sandwich, or lesser menu options. But talk to your vendors about it.
A married friend of mine gave me some advice & said she gave her vendors the option - 'I can feed you, or I can give more cash". Most will take the cash & hit up Wendy's or something. LOL I always see photogs pick at cocktail hour too so see what they prefer before you guarantee your venue anything.
Cool, thanks Bees! Oh, and one other question. At what point should you feed your vendors? For example, if they are only staying for the first dance and cake cutting, am I obligated to feed them? Or can I negotiate, if you stay for another hour or two into the reception, we can feed you?
Thanks again!
It should be in their contract whether they require a vendor meal... I've never heard of using it to negotiate, but why not try? It sounds like you might be talking about your photographer or videographer, and depending on their hourly rate it might be a little insulting to offer a sandwich in exchange for 2 more hours of their time, so I'd be careful how you phrased it, though.
Our vendor meals were $22 each, and we provided them for our DOC, photog & assistant, and band.
Yes most venues offer vendor meals. We gave our vendors what our guests were eating and they were half the price. They also had true vendor meals that were $25 each for a box lunch with a sandwich, chips and soda.
wow... i just heard back from my reception site and they only discount $30 off the price for guests. That doesn't seem like much! we would still have to pay quite a lot....
Our venue offers two vendor meals included and it's the same food that we are getting.
I would follow-up with the venue and let them know that you prefer to have cold platters for the vendors. The $30 discount would be for offering the vendors the same meal as your guests. Ask if there is a less expensive alternative. Just be sure to review your contracts to make sure that the vendors have not specified they must have "hot" meals. If so, then you must provided the hot meals for them.

Hi Bees,
Just a quick question for you all. I had heard that reception sites usually offer a discounted dinner for vendors (such as photographers, wedding planner, etc). Is this true? Like if your vendors stayed for the reception, their dinner wouldn't cost the same as your guests?
Thank you!
