I would say keep researching.... There are hotels that have great deals and wont be 200.00 per plate.
GOOD LUCK
Wow, 300 guests is a lot! We got SOO many quotes from caterers and after the initial quote, we would ask them what they could do to get in our budget. We are having stations instead of a plated meal, and we are also providing our own alcohol. The alcohol alone is saving us a few thousand.
A good caterer will come up with creative ideas to stay within your budget. Just keep looking :)
I'm paying about 100/plate but that includes alcohol, venue and food. My suggestion is find a place that does everything in one! It's def cheaper. Our place also has a sound system so we saved on the DJ bill! Good luck!
Have you posted on the local board? I'm willing to bet if you make a Florida-specific post for affordable reception venues, Florida bees will be able to make suggestions.
We are having a $100 per head reception here in NYC - if I can do it here, you'll certainly be able to find something near you.

My fiancé and I are comfortable and blessed financially in my opinion, thank god...We're certainly not rich, but We have everything we need and a lot more above and beyond. As I've been researching things for our wedding, I'm becoming more and more shocked at how inflated the prices of everything is...I don't mind paying $200 a plate if thats what the meal is worth...but some of these caterers and venues want astronomical amounts of money for nothing....I just don't wanna get ripped off, and I totally feel like these vendors are taking advantage of us...I'm also limited as far as venues go because all of our extended family is out of town, mine in New York, and his is Los Angeles...we want/have to invite everybody, but certainly don't expect everyone to come, however our venue has to accomodate 300-350 people...I'm thinking of just renting a mansion for everything and bringing our own booze and having my sister cater it....I don't really want my maid of honor cooking all day, but how else am I not gonna get ripped off??? Grr!!!
