She sounds like an unhappy person. Good for you for doing well and getting (and keeping!) a good job with benefits! 🙂

Whoa – my friend just gpt her masters and is looking for a job.  Currently she’s working two waitress jobs to make a living.  She doesn’t want to but the economy sucks and our area just laid off a bunch of teachers.  Guess what her degree is in.  Yep.  You got it.  More than likely, these people had to settle to be bussers because they couldn’t find anything else in this crappy economy.

I would love to see you tell my friend to quit complaining, take out a loan and go back to school when she already has.  How do you know what kind of degree these people hold?  They could be well educated and this could be the only job they could find.  And, this job beats no job in this economy.

You work for a country club.  I would guess that the busy season is summer, so why would you expect a day off during the busy season?

I agree with you on one thing.  A bonus is a reward, not something that is automatically handed out.  However, just like you’re grousing here, those people are allowed to grouse as well.

Instead of being mad at them talking smack, why didn’t you explain what happened with the division of cash?  Inform them rather than put them down?

@BanditGirl: Maybe. Grousing here isn’t the same as grousing directly to your coworker who you envy. But I agree… not everyone is in a poorly compensated position by choice.

@spaniel: However, the OP had the opportunity to let the staff know exactly where the “extra money” went and chose not to.  I think that, had she nipped that in the bud, she wouldn’t be feeling this way and the staff would’ve felt better as well.

I often have this argument with my DH who also complains about not getting a big enough bonus!  It really annoys me because I also think more gratitude towards having a job and appreciation of your income should be sufficient.  However I do understand the point also that in some jobs it is expected and is personally insulting to not receive one.
