I just need to get this off my chest. My fiance and I are casual friends with this lady. We started playing trivia once a week at a local restaurant after a friend invited us. We’ve become friends with the rest of the people on our team but we really only see each other once a week. There is this one lady, she is quite a bit older than I am and actually has daughters my age. She is in the middle of a divorce- she was married to a very wealthy man, hasn’t had a job in 25 years, etc. So anyway. She is this kind of person who has to turn EVERYTHING back around to herself. Last night there was a question about the great lakes and she is all, “I grew up in the Northeast! I know this!” And then another question was about Cananda and Alaska and she said “I grew up in Cananda!”. We were talking about how I started shopping for a wedding dress and she said “Where did you go?” I told her the store and she immediately said ‘I’ve bought 6 gowns there for my daughters. I know the owner. Do you need help? I have an opinion!” I said “No, actually I went by myself because I don’t want any opinions.” My fiance was talking about how he started working with this designer and she immediately said “I buy all of my furniture from there. Everytime I need something, that’s where I go. I know Jim.” She talks NONSTOP about how she used to do marketing for Ralph Lauren in NYC (like 30 years ago), and if anyone mentions anything about marketing, it’s automatically, “I worked for Ralph Lauren, did you know that?” As soon as she found out we were getting married she said “You should get married in my backyard. Have you seen my backyard?” (Sidenote: it’s a backyard on the river, nothing mind blowing). Or she wants to suggest other places because OF COURSE, she knows all of the best places. We’ve already picked a venue and have told her repeatedly that we aren’t even getting married in state.
I am just SO TIRED of everything being about her. She can’t have a simple conversation and ask how anyone else is or actually be interested in what someone else has to say without bringing herself into it somehow. I know we all know someone like this, I just had to get my frustrations out!
