I got some horrible news yesterday. Our wedding/reception venue's boardwalk in front of the house was destroyed by a recent storm surge! The owner called and said they have no plans to fix it (it would cost $30,000), but wanted to let us know in case we wanted to "pick somewhere else" to get married. This venue is a private property owned by a family friend who is artist, so needless to say I understand she can't shell out $30,000 bucks to fix it. But not the front of my venue (and the backdrop for my wedding!) is not only ugly, but potentially a safety hazard! I am stressed out, because it is likely too late to find somewhere else to get married (June 26th wedding, finding a venue now would be a nightmare!) and the place we are getting married at holds special meaning for us. She was only charging us $400 to use the place, and we do not have the money at all to pay for another venue!

I am trying to come up with ideas for hiding the washed away boardwarlk (its about 30ft of the 100 ft boardwalk that was washed away). What would you do?? I can't believe this happened!

I am empathizing with you completely! You must feel so cornered at the moment! I hope you can find a way to either conceal the area, or embrace it. Also, a picture of the area would really help us bees suggest something for you!

This may be totally off base, but if it's just boards that need replacing, could you get a bunch of handy friends together and make a day (or two) of it? Pack a few big picnic lunches, a few cases of beer and a trip to Home Depot could go a long way! If it's something structural that's an entirely different issue (unless you have a friend who's a structural engineer!), but if it's mostly a matter of time and man power, there maybe a way.

I would love to do all of those things (including a photo!) I am having a destination wedding, so I am not even in the same location of the venue (as a matter of fact, its across the country!). My FMIL is going to take some pictures next weekend so we can survey the damage and decide what to do. She suggested planting some flowers around the site, and putting up lattice work, to hide the damage. That might work!

@ Bakerella - The boards were part of a retaining wall, and the whole wall was washed away in that spot. So if it was just a matter of fixingn the boards, I would totally be on board, but really the whole retaining wall needs to be reconstructed (likely why it is so expensive).

I guess I will have to wait to see what it looks like from the photos. It's so frustrating that I am across the country from the venue and can't go have a look myself!

@Valhalla Then I hope the pictures brought back aren't too discouraging. I'm sure you will find a way to make it work!

Hmmm....not sure if this would work, but what about blocking the view with topiaries?  A line of rented topiaries...possibly with some pretty gauze-like ribbon linking them, may be a good way to delimit the reception area and block off the view.  It would totally depend on what it looked like to begin with but that was what I first thought of.  You could make your own (real or fake) or rent them.  Since you are on a beach, rented mini-palm trees may work also, perhaps?

I hope it's better than what you're expecting. Maybe the owner is in shock right now and things look worse through her eyes than it really is. I think your mom's idea of some latice work and some flowers or something is a great one! I'm sure once you get photos you'll be able to wrap your head around it (and come here for more ideas!). Good luck hon! I'm optimistic this is something you can work around and look back on as a little hiccup, not a major calamity :)
