Awww, hang in there. Try to negotiate the deposit down with the venue. Since their future is unsure, they might be willing to cut you a deal that won't put you out of too much cash in case it doesn't work out.
we had that issue too. we didn't plan from long distance, but still had so much trouble finding something that we loved and could afford. finally i had a break down and did give up. i told my husband that maybe "our venue" just didn't exist. luckily my husband didn't give up, he kept researching and dragging me to different places. after months of that, we found our venue. so don't give up, your venue is out there too!
Oh no!!! This happened to us last week and it totally sucked. I know it is hard trying to find a new venue, but don't worry, you will find a beautiful venue for your wedding.
I got a ton of great tips from the bees, both on the general board and also on the Philadelphia board. Best of luck, keep your chin up! Don't forget, you have a network of people here to help and support you.
Tell us what you are looking for: size, theme, number of guests, catered meal, etc There are bees here from Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

Thanks everyone for your support!
@julies1949 We're expecting 40-50 guests. Because we're not from B.C., we'd prefer a venue where we can do an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. The more the venue provides, the better, for simplicity's sake (ie. chairs for ceremony, arch, linens etc). We're also wanting a place that has in-house catering, preferably with a water or mountain view. So we're pretty much looking at hotels and resorts to meet that criteria.
We are open to location - as long as it is reasonably commutable from a major B.C. airport. We would love a ceremony overlooking water.
Our perfect venue that may not happen was www.thegranderesort.com the Oceanfront Grande Resort and Marina. It was perfect - lots of extras, reasonable prices (only $500 for a ceremony and reception rental fee, $35-55 a head for food). As for price, low is good and we're willing to go outside major centres to get it. Doesn't have to be super fancy.

Wow, that list was extensive. I think I looked it over fairly carefully and didn't see mention of the teahouse in Stanley park. We looked into it for our wedding, and might have gone with it, but they don't allow dancing to start until 10, which just wouldn't fly in my family. But they have two rooms that look like they would accommodate a party of your size.

I ended up choosing Minter Gardens, which would be about 20 minutes from the Abbotsford airport or an hour from Vancouver airport. Love their outdoor ceremony sites, but their reception rooms might be a little large for your party.
Also check out the Frugalbride boards, which are Canadian. There seems to be more Ontario brides than anything, but there are a few west coasters out there. One girl is getting married in Vic and having her wedding at Saxe Point Park and then the reception at one of the hotels out there.
Also, would any BC universities have nice spaces? Like UBC or Simon Fraser? Univ of Toronto has gorgeous event spaces so looking at the schools may be an option.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much everyone! You really cheered me up. I'll be looking into all your suggestions :) :)

I came across this ad today. It's not a large commercial venture but if you wanted to work with area vendors the whole bridal party, or your family, could stay in the house and have your wedding right on the beach.

Julies1949, you are truly amazing! Through you I found two fabulous contenders - Tigh Na Mara in Parksville and (through your intimate weddings link) Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna. I know they couldn't be farther apart, but I love them both, and I have tons more than that bookmarked too.
Thanks so much. I'm thrilled to find all these great options!
I was just at Summerhill winery for the daytime portion of my stagette. It was gorgeous!
We're putting a deposit down on Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna. Thanks everyone! I have such a big smile on my face right now; this venue is really a perfect compromise between price and sheer awesomeness.
I'm so happy for you! Kelowna is my home town.My parents and grandparents were born there.
I don't know where you are living in Alberta but there are great flights to Kelowna or it is a decent drive for those who choose to do so.
Any other help you need just ask!
That is what I love about this board, they are always so open and full of suggestions! Good luck sweetie, I am sure that will all of these amazing suggestions, you are bound to find something that you are going to love!
Yay, I'm glad something worked out for you. Can't say enough good things about the Okanagan, I grew up in Vernon (about 40 minutes outside Kelowna). Your guests will love it.
I could probably PM you with a couple people I know that are in the wedding business up there.

Sorry, there are no users yet.
I am having the worst day ever. We live in Alberta but are trying to get married in B.C. (around Vancouver or Vancouver Island), and finding a venue from that distance is the PITS.
Then, I found the perfect venue - oceanfront, great price, friendly manager. Then I get an email from them with my rates etc (pre contract stuff)...and the manager was like, oh by the way, forgot to tell you we're in receivership! And they don't have a buyer yet so they don't know the future of the venue at all!
I'm so frustrated I could just cry. Obviously I don't want to put money down on a place that could just default on my deposit and contract - or be a hole in the ground by next year! But it's the only venue I've found so far that I really liked and didn't charge a ridiculous amount for something that's not that great.
It just makes me want to go down to city hall. Clearly I'm never going to be able to have a wedding on a budget that doesn't make my teeth hurt just thinking about it.
