hows parking for both locations? can both hold your guest list ? whats the requirements for the hobby center-- u clean up? you set up ? ect..
I actually don't mind the lighting in the first one. But that VIEW! wow! people will be talking about that forever!
I'm sorry, but there is no comparison. #1 is way more elegant. don't worry about your color scheme not matching the gold. No one will notice.
Parking sucks at both locations... I will be paying for valet for both and valet is cheaper at Petroleum Club, option #1. Both can hold up to 300-- my guest count is at 200. And yes unfortunately at Hobby center I would have to hire someone to break down.
The Petroleum Club is gorgeous! (And cheaper?) I say go with it! Like the PP stated, no one will notice the gold in the chandeliers once it is decorated with your scheme. Good luck!!
I actually LOVE the lighting in the first one. I vote for that one.
They're both very nice, but it sounds kind of like you like #2 better. When I wasn't sure which venue to pick for mine, everyone told me that the guests will be so focused on the bride that they wouldn't even notice the view, so I ended up picking the one without. Do what reflects you and your interests the most so that you won't have regrets! =o)
LOVE the skyline views! You would need little to no decorations. That's got my vote!!
Petroleum Club is definitely my pick! It's absolutely beautiful, the skyline is amazing, and you wouldn't have to pay all the extra money for catering, rentals, etc. I wouldn't want to worry with having to rent all the stuff and paying for a breakdown fee. If I was deciding between these two, Petroleum would absolutely be my venue.
I personally would select the Petroleum Club. To me, it is far and away the most beautiful of the two venues. The elevated view from a higher floor in the building, window treatments, chandeliers, gorgeous wood flooring, beautiful chairs, etc. all make it the more elegant of the two. I don't like the fact that the Hobby Center is street level and that it has no window treatments to break up all of that glass. I also don't think the atmosphere is nearly as elegant. I definitely would not pay more for the Hobby Center, and I don't think I would even choose if it were less expensive than the other venue. However, that's just my personal opinion.
I think the Hobby Center looks like a school gym. The Petroleum Club is really beautiful and the view is a plus.
I'm with PP that I don't think anyone will notice the gold accents at all. If you think about events you may have attended in other buildings - hotel conference rooms, etc. - do you honestly remember very much about the details of the building itself?
The view, though, I do think will stand out. That's just amazing.
In my opinion, you really seem to like the second option based on the number of photos you posted and the little details like mentioning that you could put up your picture. If that's what your heart is really pulling you to do, then pick the second option. It will be far more work, and probably even more expensive than you're predicting intially predicting unless your estimate is really detailed. But, if it's always going to be over your head that you picked the first one and didn't truly love it, then spend the extra money (if you have it) and go with the choice you won't regret.
Thank you all for your feedback-- I greatly appreciate it! No Hobby Center lovers I see =( I really like Hobby Center because of the openess of the area and the simple fact that I could put our picture on the big screen outside LOL. I think it could be transformed beautifully, but that would require extra $$$$ that I'm not sure I'm willing to spend! My fiance wasn't a big fan of Petroleum Club and that's why we continued to look. I love them both.... but it looks like Petroleum Club is a better economical choice.
I went to a wedding at the petroleum club last year and it was BEAUTIFUL! I absolutely love'd seeing the skyline as the sunset, and I won't forget that. You can totally work with the gold accents. The service seemed wonderful as a guest. I don't know if the other place can top that!
@macshap: That is really good to hear! I've read other reviews too about petroleum club being so wonderful with their service which is a huge plus! May I ask, as a guest did you mind the downtown traffic, parking or the elevators at Petroleum Club?
I like both, but I would go with the Petroleum Club based on the price difference. I think that you could make your color scheme work or rework it to include what's in the room.
I voted for the petroleum club because the lobby of the other place looks like exactly that, a lobby. That said, I'm sure dressed up properly I'm sure either place will be very beautiful.
@kn8973: the wedding was at first presbyterian around 4 on a saturday i believe (but i don't live in houston or know the churches, so don't quote me on that :) ). normal city traffic didn't bother me on the couple mile drive. i don't remember having any trouble with the valet except that with 250 guests suddenly arriving, we had to wait in the valet line a few minutes, but that is to be expected anywhere, and when it gets you out of having to find parking in a big city and walk in heels, the valet service is a huge plus. then we were quickly directed to the elevator and up to the club. i don't remember having any problems with having to ride the elevator - i don't remember them trying to crowd us in or us having to wait long either. it was great that they had a coat check room for the january wedding, too. this couple had a cocktail hour in the smaller room before opening the doors up to the main room for dinner and dancing. all of the food we had was amazing too.
I really love modern venues, but that hobby center just isn't doing it for me. I think the petroleum club is jaw droppingly beautiful-- especially that view!!
I love the first one... but that's going just by pictures. You know how you feel walking into the space. If the color scheme is your only concern, I don't think you really have to worry - your colors/decor will play off the room and not clash.
I prefer #1 but it seems YOU prefer #2.
If money is not an issue for you, go with #2. Besides, I think it fits better with your wanting a modern wedding.
I agree with PPs in that no one will notice the gold chandeliers and your colors will be obvious once you decorate. But I do feel that the decor in #1 is more of the old money or Donald Trump style and may not go with your idea of a modern wedding.
I voted for #2 based on your OP but personally I prefer #1.
i think that although the chandalers arent in your color scheme... i think people might glance at them once... say "oooh pretty"... and move on to everything else in the room... it sounds like the first venue has so much going on to look at that noone will care about the gold in the lights
Is the petroleum club in Houston? If so, I have been there and it is AMAZING! AMAZING! The view is breath taking! I went to a wedding there and had such a great time!
Honestly, I really liked the Petroleum venue much more for my own personal taste. However, because you said you didn't like the gold accents/chandeliers and wanted a more modern wedding and had like, 4x the amount of pictures for the Hobby Center, I kind of thought that you really would be happier with that choice. It does have a much more modern look to it, in my eyes.
Petroleum club, cheaper and trust me no one is going to notice the color of the chandeliers
Lol-- I really only put more pics of Hobby Center because it is not a 'known' venue for weddings and it was really hard finding pics of the Hobby Center and I wanted to show the surrounding area. Petroleum Club is more known for weddings.
I would also go for the Petroleum Club. The view is AMAZING!!!!! And I agree with the PP - no one will notice if the chandeliers are a different color.
If you are going for more modern then definitely the Hobby center! However, having said that my venue is more like the the Petroleum club...very elegant with chandeliers....but I am also OLD! If I was younger, I would def go for more hip and modern venues! You will have plenty of chances to do the traditional thing later in life...
I agree with PP, I think the Hobby Center is more modern, and if you and FI prefer it, it'll look great decorated. I'm not really in love with the carpet there, but, I'm sure most peopel won't notice. I also loved the view at the Petroleum Club, but, they're both great spaces.

Ok so I've narrowed my options down to two venues and would like your help in deciding! I'm going for a more modern wedding..
I've chosen either:
The Petroleum Club which is located on the 43th floor of Exxonmobil building downtown and has a gorgeous view of the skyline! It is the cheaper of the two but I just don't like the gold accents (especially the chandeliers) in the room (my color scheme is white, purple and silver):
Or --- Hobby Center of Performing Arts. I would use their grand lobby to hold a wedding reception there. It's more expensive.. I would say about $6-7k more since I would need to bring everything in from the outside.. catering, rentals and such.. but I love the space and windows. I'm just debating if it would be worth spending the extra bucks here. Here are a few pictures of the area:
^View of the lobby at Hobby Center
Outside of Hobby Center--I believe we can put our picture on the big screen there
^Where cocktail hour would take place and guests would enter
Overlooking area
^previous weddings
Please let me know your thoughts! Which venue would you select and would you spend the extra money for Hobby Center?
