Somewhat newbie here, but we’ve been planning our wedding since our engagement last December. Yay long engagements!
We booked our church and reception venues together in February, beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright church and family owned hotel, just a half-mile from each other. Perfect!
We just got word yesterday from the church coordinator that they will be possibly starting renovations in June 2014, and we have to push up our wedding or lose the church.
Ummmm, what?! Apparently the contract doesn’t mean anything. Of course I’m happy that the church finally got the funding it’s been after for over a decade, but did they have to start construction during wedding season?
Luckily we were able to switch up a month to May because we found out so early.
Any other bees have venue problems yet? Don’t worry, after you let of some steam with some bridezilla-esque crying, everything will work out. After all, you’ve found the perfect guy, everything afterwards is just fluff 🙂

I’m sorry to hear about your venue troubles! Sounds like everything has worked out perfectly though.
I also had major venue problems. The hotel that I’m having the ceremony and reception at, was court ordered to be sold (family owned-family drama crap). So it was up in the air about what would happen after it sold. It’s a historical hotel but it’s not protected so everyone (including city residents) were afraid it was going to be demolished. Mind you, all this was happening about 5 months before my wedding. I went into panic mode lol. Everything’s fine now, the new owner has said they aren’t going to demolish it and they won’t start renovations until after this years contracts.

- Wedding: June 2013 - Upstate NY
I found out the day before my wedding my venue only allowed a 5 hour reception when I paid the caterer hundreds of dollards (literally…) for that extra half hour (5.5 hours is standard). Not a big deal but annoying.

Ugh, swoon – Frank Lloyd Wright? Of course, you lucky Chicago girl!!
Yeah, we had a problen with our first choice for our ceremony/reception site. They were basically jerks who realized they could be making more money off a bigger wedding, so they attempted to make us rent everything, and wouldn’t alter the contract to include what they promised us. The last straw was when they said we’d be responsible for renting the (outside, but required) caterer’s serving platters. Excuse me, what??? So we “broke up” with them and we were both so upset for a few weeks!
Anyway our “for realisies” venue is super awesome, closer, cheaper, and has way more character! Plus they are ultra accomodating. Woo!

I can totally relate, venue problems are so frustrating! My wedding is in Chicago too and I’m trying to plan from SC.
About month ago on a trip to Chicago I found a church and signed the contract (and paid a deposit) only to have the priest call me a week ago and let me know they have a parish festival that day and can’t have any weddings. Luckily, we can get a refund. I also thought I found my reception venue that is completely affordable and we both love, but now the wedding coordinator takes weeks at a time to respond to my emails and completely ignores some of my questions, seriously? Now I have to find a new church AND a new reception site. UGH!
But I feel much better after venting and that my wedding is still 13 months away : )
