(Closed) Venue… Questions to ask?

You want to find out as much as possible about costs involved.  What’s included in their services, what you can bring in (or not bring in).  Usually, most venues will have a packet of information to give you.  You’ll also want to find out who your primary contact is, what you need to do to secure the date (usually a down payment).

Take notes during the meeting – as you’ll likely be asked questions as well.  It was really helpful for me to jot down questions and/or things that randomly came up and have it on paper (to go back to).

The other thing – is if it ends up being your dream venue, you may have to be flexible on date.  Our dream venue didn’t have our date- so we went with another one and it all worked out great (once the initial date disappointment wore off).

This is what I always ask:

1) how many events do you hold at once

2) how far is the closet hotel to your location

3) do you have tasting and is it free

4) are you expecting any renovations to take place before my wedding date

I think the question about how many events go on at once is a big one.  A friend of mine had a motorcycle convention going on at the same time as her wedding.

Make sure you also know the maximum capacity of the hall, if that’s an issue, as well as a breakdown of all of the costs.

Is there a site fee Whats included Are you allowed to bring your own food/alcohol Is there a cake cutting fee Are there rooms to get ready How many guests will it accommodate What dont they allow as far as decorations Can you have candles Is there an event coordinator How many weddings or other events taking place on your day My venue has on site catering and we had to go with them. If thats the case ask what the food and beverage minimum is.

Agree with PP, my two cents include:

-if you can bring outside alcohol and what the corkage fees would be (we saved lots of $$$ this way)
-if you can pay using CC or if they would give a discount for check/cash. remember everything is capable of being negotiated! our venue gave us a 5% discount using cash which was better than our 2% cashback on our CC so we went with cash!
-who your contact person is on the day of. our venue had a DOC that was included but wasn’t the girl that worked with us on the contract. The DOC started emailing me two weeks prior so I got to know her well.
-parking/valet options, we had ours in downtown SF and there was another wedding nearby that our venue clued us in on. I relayed the message to our guests so they got there early and we all got parking. 😀
-ask if the prices are fixed and set, if there’s any flexibility or negotiation
-hours you’ll have the space for and ask if the time includes set up and break down
-if its outdoors, what the rainyday plan is, and check out the space/set up for it (sucks but it helps to know!)
-fire code restrictions on open flame/candles, ours was pretty stringent so they provided the allotted amount of candles for free to avoid potential brides from bringing in tons
