So right after I got engaged (2 weeks ago), I got to looking at possible places for the wedding right away. I’ve emailed a good number of places for the ceremony and reception just requesting more information since we don’t have a specific date in mind and I still haven’t heard back from a few of them. The information on some of their websites is really sparse, (i.e. not even saying what their max # is), so I’m kind of sitting in the dark here. How long should I wait for a response? Is it because I’m not asking for a specific date? I don’t want to seem impatient and email them again but I’m worried I won’t ever hear from them. You would think their response time would be short since it’s possible business for them!

I only called places and they picked up right away to answer my Questions.
Two weeks seems like a long time. Unless you have your heart set on one of those places, I’d move on. If they can’t get back to you, they may not be worth your business.

My venue emailed me within two hours. If it takes them two weeks to contact you when they are trying to win your money, just think how unresponsive they will be once they have it…!!

Well, it hasn’t been the full two weeks, some places I just emailed late last week, like Thursday or Friday, and I guess a lot of places have Monday off after all the weekend events.
It’s true, if this is how they are now, just think when it’s important! I hope I hear from them soon – It’s been hard to find places in NYC which seem affordable, can accomodate a medium sized party, and have the right aesthetic!
Maybe if I try again it will be by phone – but I love the multi-tasking of email!

I also found that a lot of places are more responsive over the phone than email, but like you, I would take unresponsiveness as a bad sign of how they make work with you as a customer. Try calling–the culture where they are may just not be an email culture. Just know that if you hire them, you will probably need to deal with them by phone (assuming that they are responsive by phone).
