I’m planning on having a bbq reception, very low key, casual. The “venue” I would love to have it at is a state park in my hometown. The problem is they don’t reserve the sites, it’s first come first serve. The major plus is that the site is free. Is this too risky given that there’s no guarantee that we’d get the site? Just looking for opinions, anyone had a bbq/picnic reception at a picnic site that was like this?

I personally wouldn’t be able to handle the stress of not being sure. But as long as you are comfortable with it and you have a back up plan if you DON’T get a site.. then go for it.

I agree with Moose. Have a back-up just in case!

Could you get some teenagers (family friends) to stake it out in the morning and help get things ready? It might be worth paying them to “babysit” the spot for you. If you don’t put a plan like that in place, it would be a gamble. Is it first-come, first-serve on a daily basis or overnight to the next day? It could be scary business!

Hmmm, that would totally stress me out! I don’t know if I could handle not knowing whether or not we’d get the spot – what would you do if you weren’t able to get it?
Are you planning on decorating at all? If so, how/when would you put them up? Personally, I just feel like the logistics of it all would make it very stressful!

I am not a wedding person at all so I was wanting to make everything as simple as possible. No decorations, no center pieces, no flowers, no favors etc … no speeches or tossing of anything, just food and family and fun.
There is another site in town that is pretty similar but can be reserved, perhaps that would be the better bet. I just really like the free price tag of this site! 😉
I would want to have a local bbq restaurant cater the occasion, so I expect having a site locked down would be necessary for them … I just really like this site lol!
There are camping spots at the state park, my Fiance and I could camp out the night before or get someone else to so they could nab the site in the morning. I was thinking the whole thing would be an afternoon event so camping the night before and grabbing the site the morning of might be an option.
