Vets Day Ideas

It's kinda weird to think of my SO as a vet, but the truth is, he is.  So every year I try to do something nice for him--mostly, take him out to dinner, make sure he knows how proud he makes me, and tell him that I love him.  This year we won't be together, which stinks, but also makes dinner impossible.  So now, I turn to the ladies of the hive for some ideas.  I was thinking of sending him a nice bottle of bourbon and some cigars, or maybe a new video game.  Steaks crossed my mind, but then he would have to cook them so that's out. I don't want to buy him anything "sensible," I think he deserves a treat.  Any ideas??

(Non military peeps out there, feel free to chime in too!)

Sorry I don't have any ideas but I think it's a great idea! DH has the day off so he's packing up all his gear.....I know most men like practical things anyways, so I'd probably just buy the steaks or take him out to eat! Does he have a favorite dessert? Mine likes (get this...) jello cheesecake. Sick, right? Loves it. More than real cheesecake. I'd make him that!

I hope when you say you're not together right now, does that mean he's been deployed again?

I love the ideas you mentioned.  I think they're really great and you are too for doing this for him.

I'd send along a little gift box of his favorite things. My FI loves it when I bring him things home from a trip to the store, when he isn't expecting them. Sometimes I get him a greeting card with a little gift card in it (not anything expensive, maybe for a burrito or 2 at Chipotle), or a greeting card and some cookies/candy, he LOVES Hershey's so sometimes I'll come home with a Hershey's and toss it in the freezer and only tell him after we're done with dinner :) Anything that will be a surprise - maybe an I-Tunes gift card if he has an iPod and likes music, or a giftcard to somewhere he likes to eat (avoids the 'cooking' issue), or if he is active military you might send him a money order written out to "Defense Commissary Agency" and tuck it inside a card saying that you hope he'll buy himself something special with it (you know, those things we love as gifts but would never spend money on for ourselves). BTW, if you've never done a money order this way, here is more information: http://www.commissaries.com/press_room/press_release/documents/2009/DeCA87_09.pdf

I don't know if the PX does the same thing or not, but I know that's how the commissaries do it. You could also send him a gift basket or something else from the virtual commissary if you are an authorized patron (this is a neat idea if he's deployed): https://www.commissaries.com/log_in/html/virtual_comm/patronauth.cfm?CFID=2935680&CFTOKEN=32812066

For something extra special, you could also send him a bouquet of every man's favorite thing. Snacks/Candy. Try http://www.sweetsinbloom.com/ they have an entire section for men!

    Just a few thoughts :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm thinking he'll love the candy idea--I got some work to do!  For the record he is not deploed (big sigh of relief), he's training down in NC and I live in CT.  Thanks again guys, you're the best!
