I just wrote a post about our videographer - Wilson Fontaine. She combines traditional videography with Super8, and I really like the look of it. If you like the feel of Super8, Wes Jones has also gotten positive reviews. Good luck, and keep us posted!
Hey i know the most amazing videographer in NY, Renzo Zanelli. His company is called Magic Flute Videos. He and his partner, I think Henry was his name, did my wedding this last September. He's now doing my sisters wedding too. It's totally documentary style, but with this really cool canon camera that can make everything look like a photograph. Seriously, they were so nice, affordable, and artistic. I highly recommend them. I think the website is www.magicflutevideos.com You can see samples of their stuff there. Also, we got a blu-ray copy of our video too!
Oh, and as for questions, you should definitely ask the format of the filming they do. Also make sure you know how long they've been doing it because a lot of people just shoot weddings on the side to make extra cash, but they're not really that experienced. It's also good to ask for references of other photographers they've worked along side, just to know their reputation.
DO NOT USE MAGIC FLUTE VIDEOS!
We were very disappointed with the quality of the video we received. The vendor's own website says that their “very style and substance promises to be captivating and artistic” and that our video would be “a commissioned artwork.” And this is exactly what we had seen in the samples we viewed and why we decided to hire this vendor. Yet, what we actually received resembles a home video except it was shot on a HD camera. Our biggest complaint is the zooming in on people’s faces to the point where not only you can’t see our hair but also our foreheads are cut off. This runs throughout the entire video. Every single pore/pimple/wrinkle is magnified which does not really make for a soft/romantic/cinematographic video most couples wish for. We wanted the video to capture moments - but instead it captured our faces. Another complaint is that the way the video is shot is like someone was using a home camera – just “point and shoot” – there are no wide angle scenes where the camera either slowly moves away (or simply “glides on air”) or moves around you in a circle giving the video that true cinematographic look. This is what we had seen in the vendor's samples, yet our own video lacks that. Our video also lacks those soft transitions that other samples have (I am not sure whether it’s done through editing or filming) or where the focus is on people yet the background is soft and blurry. We have none of that. BE CAREFUL - this vendor uses different samples to entice you but the video you actually get resembles nothing like samples. Also, our contract stated that we need 4 copies of DVD (since there are 3 sets of parents), yet we only received 3 copies. Our original DVD with photo montage was not returned to us – even though I specifically enclosed a note asking for its return when I mailed it to the vendor. Only some of the corrections/edits were made after the vendor promised to edit the video to our satisfaction. When I emailed the vendor about all this, this is the response I got from him:
"We have quit the wedding business and moved to Costa Rica. I have a friend with our backup drives in NY, i will have him send you another copy of your dvd. You will need a mac to access your files or download the latest quicktime that has the sony xdcam codec (they are raw files). sorry you were unhappy with your video. Renzo Zanelli"
That's it????

Anyone heard of any good videographers (prefer documentary style) in New York? What questions/criteria should one ask while interviewing videographers? Thanks in advance.
