I'm not much of a cook, but I love vinegar and would love to hear your favourite all round vinegar, what vinegar goes best with what, and any special recipes.

Personally, I love balsamic with bread or on a salad.  White vinegar is good on fries, but malt is just that much better.  I love apple cider vinegar for salads.

Mmm balsamic for bread is really tasty. My mouth is watering right now. I like to use red wine and white wine vinegar for cooking It's good for cooking ribs and sometimes I add a little bit to my roasts. I also use vinegar for making meatballs. Just a little bit though. the vinegar helps to keep the meat extra tender. :)

I know this is a cooking thread... but I use apple cider vinegar for my HAIR. My water is really hard and makes my hair feel coarse, even with conditioner. After shampooing, I take like a cup of water with a splash of vinegar and rinse my hair with it, leaving it in until it dries. Once it's dry, it doesnt' smell, and it feels like my hair is super soft.

I like vinegary salads.  This is my fave and refreshing on a hot day.

1 large cucumber, peeled and sliced into thin rounds

1 yellow bell pepper, sliced thinly

3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced into thin rounds

2 cups cherry tomatoes, sliced in half and lightly salted

1/2 medium red onion, sliced into thin slivers

    1/2 cup chopped cilantro

    1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup rice wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar

    salt and pepper to taste

@love108: I've used it in a bath once and liked it.  Do you think it matters if it's apple cider vs white vinegar?  I want to give the cheaper one a try!

    @JoJo Bananas:  Sounds tasty!

@love108:  DH does most of the meat, I'll pass it on!

@AB Bride: White vinegar should work, just make sure you dilute it with water if the acidity % is high so it in the same acidity range as the cider vinegar.  I think there is a range of white vinegar strengths out there.  It's the acetic acid  (main vinegar conponent) which is removing hard water mineral deposits but you don't want to accidentally add too strong of an acid and fry your hair.

@AB Bride: I've heard apple cider is "better," but I don't have any inkling why.

    Try this recipe: http://modernmealsfortwo.com/2011/07/19/vinegar-braised-chicken-with-red-onion-and-portobellos/

I was a fan, but husband isn't so big on vinegar. :(

One of my favourites is white wine vinegar (FI's grandfather tries to make tonnes of wine every year, fails and we have an endless supply of home-made vinegar! Yey!)

I love grating a few carrots on the fine side of the grater, chopping up some parsley, sprinkle some salt, some vinegar and a generous dollop of olive oil and just devouring that! Lush!!!

I love vinegar! If it's apple cider or balsamic, I'll pour some in a spoon and drink it!

The only thing I use white vinegar for is cleaning. For food, I use apple cider (with the mother), balsamic, red wine, and champagne vinegars most often.

Don't skimp on vinegar quality. There's a HUGE difference between the $12 bottle and the $2 bottle in regards to taste. You may not notice it so much stepping up to the better qualtiy one, but if you go back to the cheaper, you'll notice the difference and won't like it.

I put apple cider vinegar in some soups, like ham & bean, chili, etc.

Here's one of my favorite go-to recipes for berries:

    • big bowl full of strawberries (halved or quartered) and blueberries
    • toss with balsamic vinegar until coated
    • add a little sugar to-taste
    • top with homemade whipped cream
