I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I can do without a lawyer as far as requesting supervised visitation for my daughter’s father. He is back on drugs and drinks regularly. His ex-girlfriend recently told me that he has not picked up our daughter in a long time because he is high all the time and that when he does take our daughter that he drives her around after he’s been drinking and getting high. He was also arrested 2 days later for a domestic violence against this ex-girlfriend and her daughter. I had a consultation with a lawyer, but there is just no way that I can afford one. I’m not sure what I can do on my own, if anything? Please help.

@cupcakeFL: I am not a lawyer, but I think you would need to file something with a lawyer’s help if legally you want to prevent him from having contact with your child.

You could go to child and youth services and file a report…I believe they have to legally investigate all reports of abuse or neglect and they could remove the father’s parental rights pending a hearing. This way it’s the state vs. your child’s father instead of you.
They could also provide you advice/assistance as well…

Do you have family court where you live? A judge acts as a mediator- it’s not an adversarial process.
I handled all that stuff without a lawyer.

@julies1949: Our initial custody order was set this way but I’m just confused as to what forms to fill out and if I would be wasting my time by bringing this issue before them when really all of the proof I have is the word of his ex.
