I haven’t been in a few years but from what I recall, the area round the main train station (Station Amsterdam Centraal) is convenient to walk to all the cool attractions, and it’s pretty cute. We didn’t even have a hotel reservation, just walked around and looked at the many hotels in the neighborhood until we picked one that looked inexpensive (but decent). I loved that city, have a great trip!

I’ve only been to the airport there but I would love to visit the city someday. However, not to put a damper on your plans because I think you’ll have an amazing trip, my cousins have been many times and LOVE Amsterdam. Just be SUPER careful. A couple of years ago my uncle lived there for a few months due to a project he was working on, my aunt went to visit for a couple of weeks, and on the train from the airport, a man tripped in front of her, she stood up to help him, another guy grabbed her purse and ran off the train at the station. She lost EVERYTHING….her passport, her green card, credit cards etc. She was stuck there for 2 weeks (having only planned a 1 week trip). Make sure you hang on tight to your bags etc.
With regards to hotels, I got a room for a friend and his girlfriend a few years ago at the Hotel Pulitzer and they loved it. They said it was really close to everything so they were able to walk to places in the city and felt very comfortable there.

What a fun and exciting honeymoon!  I definetly would follow the advice of happilywaiting and snmcdowell.  I would not recommend getting a hotel by the airport–it’s in the middle of no where.  Everything in Amsterdam proper is very easy to reach by foot, bike, or public transportation (it’s great!).  I don’t have any advice on what specific hotel to stay at, but if I remember correctly, Vale from BrooklynBride went to Amsterdam, so maybe checkout her blog to see if she has any advice.

I LOVE Amsterdam.  I spent a month there during college for an ethics class.  Don’t get a hotel near the airport, but the other bees already mentioned that 🙂  I can’t emphasize enough that Amsterdam is SO walkable.  It’s really easy to get everywhere just on foot if you like, but they also have a great transit system, or you could rent bikes!  If I were going, I’d stay near Vondelpark: http://www.amsterdam.info/parks/vondelpark I know there were a few hotels around there.  But really, there are too many neighborhoods to even decide on.   It’s a GREAT city.

Honestly wherever you stay in Amsterdam you will be able to take the tram into the main part of town, Amsterdam really isn’t that big. We stayed at a hotel, that was modern (I can’t rember the name, but I have a scrapbook so I can look when I get home) and it was a little outside the main part of town, but the tram stopped right in front so we just hopped on 🙂

When you go to Amsterdam you HAVE to go to the Ann Frank musuem, its amazing & they have her actual diary there too. Also if you & your FI are beer drinkers the Heineken factory was really fun too! And, you have to check out The Bulldog, its one of the most famous coffee shops in Amsterdam 🙂

You will LOVE Amsterdam, most people speak English & the city is so pretty & clean. Enjoy!
